He definitely has a bigger engine than Matthé Pronk, but he's also a lot
bigger and Pronk had Joop Zijlaard on the derny. Pronk is quite
experienced on the track, a regular 6-day rider; how's Backstedt's "track
record"?

That's the whole point of this record attempt: it's behind the derny. Joop
Zijlaard is the man you want on the derny because he's very experienced
and extremely fat.

Seriously? It's a scooter that is used to pace the rider(s). These days
they ususally use an electric moped.

In the good old days, there were entire bike races that were run as
motorpaced or derny paced events. Now, just about the only standard bike
race to use a derny is Keirin, a track event where a small pack of
riders spends a few laps fighting for position behind the derny, and the
derny pulls off for the last two laps.

When they do pari-mutuel keirins in Japan, I think they use another
cyclist, a trick my local indoor velodrome also uses. Gloat: there's two
indoor velodromes on this continent, and one is less than 10 km from my
house.

Ed, you are missing the entire point of durny pacing. Since that blocks
the wind the size of the motor becomes the limiting factor and not the
size of the rider since rolling resistance is then the major friction
causing factor.

I expect Magnus to break the record.
