Are the bearings on both sides of a Suzue Basic rear track hub (known by other names, but it's the loose bearing model that costs about $30) 1/4 inch? Or something else? I'm sure someone has replaced these.

They are not the same, wish i could remember tho. I think one side is 1/4 and the other 7/32 or 7/32 and 3/16 but not the same...

Suzue's SIL-SP rear hub uses nine 1/4" balls on the "free" side cup; the cup on the "fixed" side contains ten 3/16" balls.

He got three different answers from usually-reliable sources:
I said 5/32" on the fixed side.
John Dacey said 3/16" on the fixed side.
Peter Chisholm said 7/32" on the fixed side.
So I popped one apart and measured it. Turns out that, on the average, we were all right!
However specifically, only John had the correct number.

The clever design is affordable because Suzue uses a standard front cup on the fixed side with a front cone drilled to 9.5mm. Therefore use 1/4 on the freewheel side and 3/16" on the fixed side.
(The prudent rider will watch the lubrication and adjustment more closely on that hub)

I figured it all out eventually and I'm sure I'll find a use for 5/32 bearings somewhere...
You're not exaggerating about the adjustment on this hub. I think my next fixed gear wheel will use another model. Riding this hub in Minnesota in winter means my 13 and 15 mm cone wrenches are getting a workout.
