Bearing Sizes

Peter Chisholm and Adrew Muzi are regulars and with shops that are Campy specialist.

Chorus pedals are 1/8 inch(but I wouldn't muck with them if they are smooth) and Nucleon are 5/32
all around, front and rear.

Not really altho I reuse them. If you don't use them, don't use to many bearings. They must sit
snuggly in the cup, in the proper place and not touch one another.

It depends on the design. Mostly, the bearing cages are there to speed up assembly, not to serve any
functional purpose. They don't slow things down appreciably, but they don't help. They may
negatively affect headsets. In those cases, I don't re-use them. Only in headsets (and pedals, but
it's been a while since I re-packed a pedal) can you really fit more loose bearings than are in the
cages. If your headset is beginning to feel notched, using loose bearings and adding an extra one
will usually cure the problem.

But I did re-use them on a newish Campy hub, the ones with the aluminum axle. There, it would be
a nightmare to get the bearings to stay in the right position to put it back together, without
the retainer.

The benefit here being more surface contact area reducing the wear on the cups and races. when I use to work at a bike shop I routinely removed the cages to add an extra bearing - at least in the bottom bracket and hubs for customers.
