Although they have revised their opinion it now reads as though a 3 year old child playing on the
lawn should helmet up every time he gets on his tricycle and remove it whenever he gets off. The
idea of a trike as a thing you can just leap on and pedal, then leap off and run around is
therefore destroyed. Getting on and off a bike becomes a tedious chore, especially for a toddler.

"Currently, only about 1 in 5 cyclists wear a helmet, and dozens of riders are killed every year in
the UK. Many more are left with severe debilitating brain injuries, with long-term problems such as
personality changes and learning disabilities."
BBC Website
Note that the BBC cleverly doesn't say that "dozens of riders are killed every year in the UK as a
result of _head injuries_". The reader is left to infer this but few of them wouldn't. Neither does
the BBC say, "but the benefits of cycling outweigh the risks".

Thousands are dying from lack of exercise. (clippings from hda-online.org.ukindex.aspOpen ↗)
"Around 1 in 5 adults in the UK - about 8 million in total - is obese. Data from the National Travel
Survey (2001)shows that the average distance walked has fallen from 255 miles in 1975/6 to 186 miles
in 1998/2000. Bicycle mileage for the same years fell from 51 to 38 miles. Women reporting activity
less than once a week increased from 35 per cent in 1994 to 41per cent in 1998, with the proportion
of sedentary men increasing from 30 to 35 per cent. There is substantial evidence to support the
role of physical activity in promoting good health. Regular physical activity:
1. decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality in general and of coronary heart disease
mortality in particular.
2. prevents or delays the onset of high blood pressure, and reduces blood pressure in people with
hypertension.
3. helps control body weight, through increasing energy expenditure and helping the 'energy balance'
4. lowers the risk of developing Type II diabetes through increasing insulin sensitivity.
5. reduces the risk of some cancers.
6. helps to maintain bone density and hence prevent osteoporosis.
7. reduces the risk of depression and has positive benefits for mental health - including reduced
anxiety, enhanced mood and self esteem.
8. helps in the prevention and treatment of non-specific back pain through enhancing joint
function."
