I have just installed a square-taper Shimano XT bottom bracket into a Fisher Sugar with Race Face cranks. The non-drive crank contacts the lip of the "hollow barrel" on the swingarm near the pivot.
This is a mountain bike, spec'd for a 68x113 bb (and the bb is the correct size). The way I see it, I have two options:
1) Reinstall the crankarm and tighten the bolt less (to drive the crank less far up the spindle... make sense?) This doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
2) Despite specs, buy a bb with a wider spindle (assuming I can find one)... and this raises the issue of knee strain. Will a wider pedal stance cause me kinesthetic problems, like knee pain?

If you tighten the crank part way you will just bugger it it you ride it that way. Get a longer BB spindle. A couple of mm won't kill your knees. If you ride more than one bike,very likely each one has a different 'Q' factor.
