  1. Pretty much from the beginning I have had an intermittent ticking noise coming from the BB. Bike is
4 months old probably 1000 to 1,500 miles on it.

It has now become more persistent. Have swapped pedals, made sure the crank bolts were torqued to
the right spec and tightened the BB to their torque spec.

Today removed the BB and at the recommendation of a local bike mechanic re-installed it and coated
the threads with anti-seize compound. After re-installing the BB and the cranks I spun the cranks by
hand gently without the chain on the chainrings and you could hear a faint ticking.

Under load my riding partners hear it and it is driving me crazy.

This sounds to me as though it is a bearing defect. Any suggestions?

  2. Replace it!? Go for a better grade BB than stock. What bent is it and what crankset are you using?

  3. It is a Barcroft Virginia and the BB is a Shimano 6500 which I think is Ultegra. The cranks are FSA
Gossamer. What BB would you suggest?

  4. Hmmm...The Ultegra is a fine and normally very durable. What kind of mileage is on it and under what
conditions? It is the BB I use often as an upgrade in many Octalink 118.5mm applications and for
many build ups. I also like the FSA Platinum Pro and Americian Classic. With the BB removed you
should be able to feel any defects. If it is the BB I would not hesitate to recommend replacing it
with the same Ultegra level BB. Ticks, clicks and pings that eminate from the BB area or seem to...
can be from loose crank arm to chainring hardware or even from strange as it seems... the headset,
usually a bad lower bearing that pings under torque. I had a friend with a Corsa that while riding
next to him I would swear it came from the crank...well we did all the normal things including BB
removal it was fine, pedal swap etc. and found nothing. It was a bad lower HS bearing.

  5. I'd try another BB and if it goes away, try to get Shimano to compensate. If it doesn't go away with a new BB, I am wondering about facing the BB shell. Do these BB shells get faced before BB installation?

I had the same prob with my V2.The tick noise was from the pedals.Although the pedals were new I had
to re tighten them into the cranks.I noticed that they had a sloppy[slight wiggle] fit when
threading into the crank. Something to check for???

1,000 to 1,500 on pretty good roads. Do you mean in the BB itself? Turning the BB I didn't feel
anything. As I said I torqued the cranks to about 33 ft lbs, max is 36.

I had not considered the headset. However, oddly enough when I first started hearing this I
tightened the cranks as they weren't that tight. That seemed to make it go away for awhile but it
would keep coming back. It was very intermittent. It has only recently become more persistent.

I went through this problem on my Vision VR42 after about 7000 miles. No ticking when you spin the
cranks, only under load. I swapped the pedals, but the tick was still there. I removed and remounted
the cranks. Still there. I removed and reinstalled the BB, with lots of Loc-tite. Still there.
Finally realized the BB itself had too much play, and would "tick" under load. A new BB solved it.

After your milage the BB should still be good, but in your position I would try another set of
pedals (as noted above) and if that doesn't do it, go for a new BB.

  10. Re facing, see:

    http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/howfix_bbtap.shtml

My impression is that crank arms should be tightened once and then left alone. If you keep re-tightening them, you can end up with ticking sounds. That is my impression (I seem to recall going down that road), but I will defer to the professional mechanics if they say differently.

I've had a similar problem happen to me. I cured it by removing the pedals and then cleaning and
greasing the threads. The grease had dried up after several remove/replace cycles.

Do the same with the chainring bolts. They're a great source of mystery ticks.

  12. Jude, maybe you could comment on two things: 1. it seems to me, every time I have a BB issue, that
really is the BB, it makes the noise at the exact same spot on the crank revolution 2. I once had a
very annoying "tick" that was BB related, but it was the plastic cup, not the bearings. I've heard
other Cup problems also, some just don't match up well.

  13. Jim, That is very little mileage for an Ultegra BB even in the worst conditions. While riding see if
the noise is present while on the big chainring and middle chainring and the middle. Pedal with one
foot then the other see what happens. There is also the static test. Use a wind trainer if you have
one or get help from a friend and put the front wheel against a foxed rigid object so as to clear
the pedals to rotate, with the friend holding you up torque the drivetrain in different positions
and right and left listen for the sound. The same can be done on a windtrainer. This is how we found
the bad HS bearing on the Corsa. Sometimes its a matter of starting all over again. Remove the
crankset, remove the BB, hold it and feel for any roughness while turning the axle. If none go to
the crankset and check the five pin bolts . These must be tight! The same pin holds the both
chainwheels. Regrease all threaded parts and reassemble. This includes the pedals. Have you tried
    different pedals?

  14. Jude I have had the front wheel wheel skewer make noise that sounded like the Ultegra BB on my
Trek OCLV. Tightening the skewer down made the noise go away. An Ultra rider friend of mine had
his Ultegra BB replaced this year before PBP with 30,000 miles on it and he said it was still
    butter smooth.

I always install them with plumbers teflon tape. I think it helps. Dave Gotta have quiet when I

  15. I once had a "BB" ticking noise drive me nuts for a week on my Tour Easy. I tried all the usual
remedies. Nothing helped. Then, I noticed the front derailleur cable. It was a little too long, and
as the right side crank went by, it just touched the little tin tip on the end of the cable. Tick,
    tick, tick, tick,...............

    Tom Thompson

  16. I assume...you are talking about older BBs with loose or caged bearings. The plastic cup being the
water sleeve. Or are you talking about sealed Shimano units like the LP-27 which use a threaded
plastic cup??? In the case of the older type...don't mix cups use an intact set consisting of r and
l cups, lock ring and bearing sets. Since cups are fixed they will wear most at the area of most
bearing pressure of the pedal stroke.

  17. actually "cups" are not the correct term I guess, i'm talking about the sleeve on the current
shimano BB, i had a plastic one that would tick reagardless, switching to a steel sleeve corrected
it. have you every experienced this?

    Jude T. McGloin said:

I assume...you are talking about older BBs with loose or caged bearings. The plastic cup being the
water sleeve. Or are you talking about sealed Shimano units like the LP-27 which use a threaded
plastic cup??? In the case of the older type...don't mix cups use an intact set consisting of r
and l cups, lock ring and bearing sets. Since cups are fixed they will wear most at the area of
most bearing pressure of the pedal stroke.

Jude, maybe you could comment on two things: 1. it seems to me, every time I have a BB issue, that
really is the BB, it makes the noise at the exact same spot on the crank revolution 2. I once had
a very annoying "tick" that was BB related, but it was the plastic cup, not the bearings. I've
heard other Cup problems also, some just don't match up well.

  18. Jude checked the pins and they are tight. I was wrong about one thing. The faint ticking I heard
without the chain attached was the magnet on the cadence.

What do you think of teflon tape? Considering that next.

    Thanks

Jim, That is very little mileage for an Ultegra BB even in the worst conditions. While riding see
if the noise is present while on the big chainring

    and

    Quoted message said:

middle chainring and the middle. Pedal with one foot then the other see

    what

    Quoted message said:

happens. There is also the static test. Use a wind trainer if you have one or get help from a
friend and put the front wheel against a foxed rigid object so as to clear the pedals to rotate,
with the friend holding you up torque the drivetrain in different positions and right and left
listen for the sound. The same can be done on a windtrainer. This is how we found the bad HS
bearing on the Corsa. Sometimes its a matter of starting all over again. Remove the crankset,
remove the BB, hold it and feel for any roughness while turning the axle. If none go to the
crankset and check the five pin bolts . These must be tight! The same pin holds the both
chainwheels. Regrease all threaded parts and reassemble. This includes the pedals. Have you tried
    different pedals?

1,000 to 1,500 on pretty good roads. Do you mean in the BB itself?
