BB Bother....

The plot thickens.

LBS called me to say good news/bad news:

GN=BB out

BN=BB was cross threaded on installation (i.e. by Dawes' Asian assy shop).

So, it's as good as buggered...

However, a call to Dawes and it /seems/ as though I'll be getting a new
frame, however the actual logistics of getting the frame back to
Barnsley, what state of build it should be in and who is paying for what
escape me at the mo. Dawes seem keen to do the right thing though,
hopefully it will all be in place in time for the Oh-dah on 16/10 out of
Holmes Chapel (to say nothing of me getting to jbex every day).

LBS want fifteen quid currently; Allens (the orig. supplier) advise I
should strip the frame down or incur their build-up charges, Dawes had
closed for the evening by the time I was ready to speak to them again.

Fingers crossed though, barring a bit of [censored] re. frame movements it
looks like they are going to be Top People.

I don't think they're actually allowed to do that in the EU. Doesn't mean
they won't do it, of course.

I spoke to the Warranty Manager at Dawes head office this morning.

We have decided to remove the dealer from the loop, as they seem unwilling to get involved in backing up their responsibilities so I'll be partially stripping the bike this morning and sending off to Birmingham where Dawes will replace the frame (and fork as that's had a bit of a problem..)

All in all then I'm well chuffed, Dawes have dealt with this brilliantly. Well done them!

I always like to know about companies who give good support *after*
they've got your cash. Perhaps you could tell us the name of the
dealer who didn't really want to help you out?

That's really naughty. It was a faulty built-up bike they sold you, not
just a frame with a crankset. I don't see how they can possibly justify
passing on part of the cost of replacing it to you. The fact that they
didn't install the BB is irrelevant; that's purely between them and
Dawes.

Allens Cycles of Barnsley, but to be fair to them it was all a bit confused. The warranty bloke at Dawes (Mike Mudd) just took it all in hand and told me to get the bike to him. It took a half hour to strip it right down, a nice job and I'll be happy enough putting it all back together as well - properly!! Plus I get chance to replace cables, really clean the mechs etc.. so it will be just like a New Bike.

Now I need to wrap a frame and fork ready for shipment...

PS the people at my very local lawn mower and bicycle shop (P&H Lawnmowers and Cycles of Hyde, Cheshire) have also been brilliant. I wish they did high end bikes as well as three grand grass cutters.

Same with HGV wheel nuts - left hand thread on offside (AFAIR from HGV
driving days). If normal thread you had to do a regular tightening
check or lose a stud occasionally.

Indeed, and as the UK isn't as "the consumer is always screwed" as the US
is, you even have various forms of legal recourse. The easiest solution of
course is simply to never ever buy so much as a bolt from them again and
nail them to all the walls of shame you can find, of course.
