  1. I have one light set, where you hang a lithium ion battery from a carbon
fiber top tube. With all these revelations with Dell laptops, and cell
phones starting on fire, because of their lithium ion batteries, this is
causing some concern for me. If the lithium ion battery starts on fire
under my carbon fiber top tube, how long can it burn before the tube is
damaged? If the top tube is compromised, how would the bike crash?

I can't tell you about your battery, but the Dell batteries have problems
from the manufacturing process. Not all lithium ion batteries are having
issues, otherwise you would be seeing all laptop and cell phone manufactures
    recalling batteries.

You're smart to be concerned. Send the bike and light set to me for
    complete testing and evaluation.

(BTW, chicks dig fast bikes on fire. Helps 'em see ya at night, too!)

Nomex bib shorts are the latest thing. Use a safety gel instead of chamois cream
    with the asbestos chamois.

Usually the battery shorting out and catching on fire happens during the
    charging process.
So don't charge the battery on the bike.
Only some batteries have this problem, in Dell's case a manufacuring problem
    came to light.
Yes if the battery catches fire it could very likely damage the carbon fibre
    frame.
But it depends on the carrier, how the carrier is designed and what
materials the carrier is made out of.
I have been messing around with and using Lithium Ion batteries for quite a
while and have yet to have one go off on me.
Knock on wood. When I started they were extremely expensive, so I wound up
using old surplus cells and batteries from other sources for my needs.
At that time I had to make my own special chargers for them too. So I was
very concerned about getting a battery to burn up on me.

It can't possibly get damaged enough to crash before you notice a fricking
explosion between your legs. Trust me on *that*.
