  1. I shall be riding through the night carrying Go Bars soon (and water) in a
waist bag. I reckon I should have to ride from 2200 - 0700 with no shops
being open. That's 9 hours riding, so how many 200 calorie Go Bars do you
reckon I need to carry? Will 10 be enough, given that I've got to shove the
stuff down my neck without gagging anyway? ;-)

Not sure which go bars you are talking about, but I would take four of
the 968 Colorie SIS ones <URL:http://www.scienceinsport.com/Go-Bar.htm>
and then expect to only consume two plus energy drink and a couple of
bananas. The extra two bars are just in case. Nearly 4000 calories
should be enough and 260g is not that much to carry. Though you do have
    the same gagging problem.

From where and to where are you going?

I have a box of those bars, but each bar is labelled as containing 206 kcal
(875 kJ), so 4000 calories is 20 bars! My bag only holds about 10 (leaving
room for other stuff) and in any case, eating 20 bars would not be easy.
I've got some of this energy gel as well though

30-35 kcal/hr is a normal kind of "fuel consumption". You can't
replenish all of this in-flight because your blood has more pressing
things to do than hang around your stomach - i.e. keep your legs
working! I can do 90 miles plus on two flapjacks without bonking at the
end, but it depends quite a lot on the temperature. If it's cold you
    burn it off much quicker.

Yup my mistake, but they still don't agree with your bars mine being
968kJ. I guess the real measure is how fast you can "graze" on them?
One and hour? I don't think I could eat them any faster than that.

I think you may be an order of magnitude out in your estimate.

Play around with these equations to get a better estimate of energy
    consumption:

    Taken from:

    http://www.frontier.iarc.uaf.edu:8080/~cswingle/misc/exercise.phtml
These relationships can be written as follows, where y represents the rate
of energy consumption in Kcal / min for a 150 pound rider, x represents the
average speed travelled in miles per hour, and exp(a) means e to the power
    of a:

    a.. Mountain bicycling: y = 1.47 * exp(0.144 * x)
    b.. Touring: y = 1.41 * exp(0.125 * x)
    c.. Racing: y = 1.34 * exp(0.107 * x)

You also need to take into account that although there is an energy value on
the wrapper, it does not follow that *all* of the declared energy will be
    available to you.

    My mistake. I meant 30-35kcal/MILE.

FWIW, the "touring" example above gives 44kcal/mile at 18mph which seems
    a bit high.

They are different flavours/compostion - maybe that affects the calorie
    figure. Mine are banana.

What's your route Simon? Up the Fosse? I'll be doing my Leicester
to Hull and back ride (over 2 days - 215 miles) in 2 weeks time. I've
picked a nice route keeping off A roads for 90% of the journey. My
weeks of training have paid off - - I did 110 miles on Thursday,
averaged 15.8 mph and felt perfectly OK afterwards.

As I LOVE malt loaf, that is what I took with me (10 slices) plus 2 x
750ml Go electrolyte drink bottles, plus another 750ml Volvic
    sweetened water purchased from shop.

Take a toothbrush! Even three bars will make your mouth horrid overnight!

You probably burn around 400kCal/hour cycling. Some, hopefully will come
from your body's reserves of glycogen and fat.

Aim to eat about half you are using, so 1 Go bar/hour. Any more will
make you gag. Eat the rest as anything you *really* like before and
    after your ride.

    ENJOY!

  11. One bar an hour it is until the shops open, then I should be about 100
miles from home. Chewing gum at the ready!

Yes, basically a rerun of the failed attempt from 5 years ago along the same
route. Good luck with your ride :-)

I saw the thread title and thought 'That is one heck of a lot of

Are there really no 24hr cafes between Bristol and Hull?

LOL! In the "candy vs. energy bar..." thread, someone posted a link to a
recipe for "malt loaf" (being a colonial Canadian I hadn't heard of it
before) ... now my cycling roomies want me to bake some malt-loaf for them.
    😉

Do you make it yourself or get store bought?

For our Canadian cousin, we should maybe explain.

Soreen is a popular brand of malt loaf. Most tiny shops stock it. It is
    cheap and pannier proof...

It's also compressible and fits nicely into a jersey pocket once compressed.
And you can pull bits off of it as you go along without getting really
    messy.

Why not merge some 24 hour service stations into your route for the
night section, Audax events do this. Save you carrying so much and will
    offer some variety for food

YEt Soreen is the most expensive. Morrisons sell at least 3 varieties,
some as little as 29p IIRC. IMHO Soreen still tastes best. Wish they'd
sponsor LEL and give it away to us.
