Ive never been a fan of the bar plugs that come with bar tape, I just dont like something that I throw away that dosent really wear out. This never bothered me enough to do anything about it until now, I just put together a new bike and the bar is an easton ea70 with an oversized clamping area. the bar plugs dont fit they just slip right in. I was wondering if there was a better solution out there now that I have a real problem. Ive found several that are make for the bmx or mountain industry and was wondering if they would work in a road application. thanks. also I know about the one bontrager sells that supposeldy damped road vibration but am trying to avoid them.
Pretty halarious that they want you to pay that much. Ahh, the niche market. I know what you're saying about bar plugs not fitting. This is because unudjustable plugs that typically come with handlebar wrap are just that, unudjustable. They can only be made in one size and unfortunately, bars come in a variety of diameters. The plugs on the site you are referring to are adjustable and will fit most. Beware though. The adjustable plugs are also not made to fit all bars. You have to consider the thickness of your bar tape, as well as the inside diameter of your bars in order to buy the proper plugs. Instead of paying the high amount for a pair in-store or online, I just stole some from an old throw away bike. Adjustable ones seem to have been common on mid-high range bikes in the 60s-70s-80s. I got mine from some 70's schwinn. Lais, FTU
Thanks I'll have to keep an eye out for some on an old bike, Yeah those prices are out of control but I suppose id only have to buy them once, until I ended up with two bikes but thats just a gleam in my eye.

Call around to your local shops and ask for Velox bar end plugs. Should be about $3/pair or so. They are rubber with and expanding plug and work great.
Rivendell sells them online for $6/pair which is overpriced since you can buy a card of 30 for about $35 from Airbomb.
If the bar plugs slip out, just put a layer or two of electrical tape around the outside of the plug. It's invisible once the plug is in the bar, and is a lot cheaper than buying new plugs.

If your local shops don't stock them, velox bar-ends are $4 per pair at wallingford bicycle parts.
