What's it like to ride with bar-end shifters? In the past I've riding
with downtube shifters and trigger shift recently on my mtb. I'm
thinking about buying a Dawes Galaxy but I feel as if I wouldn't get
on with shifters where they come as standard.

I have bar end shifters on my Galaxy and prefer them to downtube shiftters.
They are part and parcel of the relaxed riding experience that the Galaxy
encourages. I also have an STI fitted road bike, a twist grip hybrid as
well as a trigger shift MTB. The Galaxy is the most frequently ridden bike
of the four and has covered the most miles this year. It doesn't take long
to adapt to the use of bar end shifters. Half an hour or so and I was a
convert.

They're fine, and possibly more robust than more 'upmarket' types.

I like the ones I've got, where you just twitch the brake levers.

I like the ones I've got, where you just twitch the brake levers.
I had bar-ends on the Galaxy but swapped them for STI's.
Must say I wouldn't go back.
I find STI much better,but each to their own.

Bar ends have a friction mode that you can use if the indexing does not work
properly for some reason. An advantage when touring.

I have no trouble switching from the bar-end shifters on my tourer ond the
Ergo levers on my road bike. If you're touring and want reliability stick
with bar-ends.

So they're not indexed?
Why do Dawes only put the on the cheapest Galaxy if that's the optimum
way to go?

Yes the rear is indexed, but you can also use the rear in friction mode if
you have a problem with your rear gears.

The rear is indexed but can be very easily switched to friction mode if
the indexing goes out of alignment.

Style and fashion mainly. Integrated brake and gear levers are very
nice, and, other considerations aside, I prefer the STI setup on by
racing bike to the bar-end levers on my Galaxy. However, for touring,
which is what the Galaxy is meant to be for, the reliability of
bar-ends still gives them the edge IMV.

Guess I'll just have to give them a go and ask if that LBS will change
them if I don't like them.

I had bar-ends for years on my Galaxy, and my wife still has them on
hers, but I changed to STIs and got short arm cantis to mate with them.
Why? Bar-end are vulnerable to damage in an airplane.
The best shifters in my opinion for touring are MTB stis, rapidfire or
whatever they're called. They are effortless, whereas you need a bit of
effort with your left hand with STis.
