bar and barcon shifter incompatibility....

  1. so the ID of my Nitto B601 bar is about 17mm

    the OD of my NOS Campagnolo barcons is about 19mm

    to get these to fit this bar....should i have metal removed from the
    shifter or the inside of the bar?

    i have access to both a drill press AND lathe....so no shade tree
    mechanic rigging here....

    From a safety point: the shifter, as there's plenty of metal with no
    other reason but to fill the inside of the bar.

    Thinning the bar makes it more prone to failure (actually some
    lightweight bars explicitely deny barcons), though a failure there
    probably wouldn't be fatal...

    If there is enough meat turning down the wedge is probably easiest.
    (Clamp in 19mm tube, turn down half, flip over bits and clamp in 17 mm
    tube etc)

  5. ohhh, i really think you should take 1mm off the barcons, 1mm of the
    handlebars. And then, use the bars for 3 months and sell the parts
    separately on Ebay! Yeah THAT'S the ticket !!

    Gee, how'd you know what sort of stuff I get when I buy on ebay.

    My latest was a tubular wheelset that turned out to be clincher?!?!?!?!

  7. To make barend shifters fit into tubes (handle bars) with inside diams
    that are too small, I do this:

    1. Grind down the the widest edge of the big fat bolt that runs
    through the center of the expanding wedges. Grind the widest portion
    of the wedge shaped end evenly all around

    2. Remove retension ring that holds the expanding wedges onto the
    exansion bolt. Take out one of the three wedges. Save the ring and
    extra wedge and clearly label them so you know what they are five years
    from now. Stuff the assembly as best s possible into the bars and see
    if they know fit and still secure the assembly.

    3. You mafe file the wedges down, if still too small.

    4. Try just the "missing wedge" option, above first, grind the
    expansion bot only if too big to fit, consider grinding down wedges
    only as a last resort.

    The above works well to get barends into the ends handle bars, time
    trial / aero bars that would otherwise be too small to accept barends.
