Bag o' salad

Our major food chain had a fire sale last week, on everything Dole. If
I buy the bagged stuff, I dig through the back of the shelf and get the
furthest-out "use by" date.

When I look at thse bags they look to me like something that's already
been through a fire... looks like a sack of dried out leaves about as
parched as what's on the trees right now. I just don't see how any of
those bagged leaves look worth buying, I can rake up all I want from
under my trees. I mean like why whould any normal person pay so much
for a little bag of shredded cabbage... for about a quarter the price
you can buy the whole head and shred it yourself.

Actually there were 18 heads all together, and I still have four more
heads of red cabbage I haven't harvested yet. Of the green cabbages I
gave away ten heads. The first head I rough chopped and sauteed in
butter, Next one became fried noodles and cabbage. One six pounder
became cole slaw, in fact the last of it was eaten yesterday... my
daughter visited with the baby for the one year birthday (can't believe
it's already a year) so I roasted a turkey breast with acorn and
butternut squash. I gave her a cabbage, a huge bag of string beans,
some yellow summer squash and some of the winter squash to to take
home. Whenever I prepare cabbages I like to eat the very inner tender
leaves raw, and the cabbage heart too, very sweet... and fresh picked
cabbage tastes wonderful, nothing like that old storage cabbage from
the stupidmarket... and I don't even call those pre-sliced bagged ones
cabbage, not even as good as the outer leaves I put in my composter.

The ones our supermarket gets are pretty fresh - they need a cold-water
wash and a spin, and you can't tell them from the freshest bunch of
lettuce in the bulk place. I buy the bagged stuff when I want a
variety, or I think I won't use up a whole bunch before it goes bad, or
when it's on a mega-sale. I've never bought the cabbage or the plain
iceberg....I wouldn't think the cabbage would stay crisp as well as the
lettuces do.

I'm drying them, got them all threaded and just hanging around... they
will get crushed to sprinkle on pasta and pizza. I already have two
quarts pickled and gave a lot to neighbors. Those are some *HOT*
jalapenos, and the tiny Thai peppers are nuclear.

Yes, the nights are cooler but the days are still unseasonably warm,
but that will all change soon... meanwhile the fall foliage is rushing
headlong into it's fiery finery.

Yes, I saw that movie, was a goodie. Sunflowers evolved to adopt that
postion to ensure their survival... with their flowers upside down like
that their seeds are safe from birds and squirrels. Only the bees and
hummingbirds were able to get to their pollen... was amazing to watch
how frustrated the seed eating birds got trying, could actually see
them have a hissy fit, but was just no way they could reach around that
formiddable ridge of barbed sepals, must seem like razor wire to them.
Of course once they seeds ripen I put them out for the birds, only save
a couple heads for me. The bluejays are gorging as I type, just about
picked clean.

I used to do a lot of canning and freezing but the past few years I do
a lot of eating, swapping, and donating. When I have a good tomato
crop I make sauce and freeze it, but this year the weather was not very
cooperative... had more than enough tomatoes for eating but not quite
bountiful enough to bother with sauce... last year I froze fifty pints.

I bought one of those big bags of Romaine from COSTCO a couple of weeks
ago and I was shocked as to how long it lasted. Just started using the
last one today. I'll buy there again!
