Anybody who can imply that a guy who runs (and wins) a 135-mile in
Death Valley is somehow afraid of competition is a bigger man than me,

I was looking at the photos of the ws100. In this photo of Dean
http://tinyurl.com/b4yza he looks like he has bulked up quite a bit. I'm
not sure if being that muscular is an advantage.

I just don't happen to like the guy's all-to-public style so would like to
see him get beat there. He may not be a bad guy in person, but his

Yes, with badwater just over 2 weeks after WS it will be difficult. Last
year he ran VT 100 after WS and finished about 4th or something. It will be
interesting because as you say the heat and extra mileage are there, and an
always slower pace for badwater.

I noticed that at WS, his victory margin was not that large, and his time
wasn't very fast (I mean, by his standards). Makes one wonder if he just left
something in the tank and ran away at the end, with a view to saving himself
for badwater.

Kinda scary: most of his go-to foods are on my frequent rotation as
well, Pedialyte and grapefruit excepted. Though I will eat the

As corny as it sounds every year is a different race. Variations in
temp, humdity, etc always effect the outcome. I'm sure he had someone
telling him how far back his nearest competitor is and whether he is
gaining or losing. I don't know Scott but maybe he just likes to finish
first and not necessarily looking for a record ot trouncing his
competition. .

Normally I'd agree and wouldn't root against an individual, at least not
publically, and you can't blame someone for self-promotion in the USA I
suppose; but that also opens you up to more public scrutiny, and I'm not the
only one who finds Dean's public style irritating.

People who seek public attention deserve to be judged for better or worse
IMO. Take for example Lance Armstrong. While I've admired him as a rider for
years and find his exploits thrilling to watch, I've come to have mixed
feelings about his approach to the sport, and hope he gets beat this year --
and I'm not alone by any means in this view.
