    Previous course records:
    Men's: Anatoli Kruglikov, 2000, Russia, 25:09:05.
    Women's: Pam Reed, 2002, USA, 27:56:47.

Jurek led from start to finish
    http://www.badwaterultra.com/2005web/2005splits.htm

My guess is he'll never run it again because it's on roads - demoralizing
for a trail guy. OTOH he may come back and try to break 24 hours, though I
wouldn't think that kind of goal would be important to him. It's not the
same as a track goal of say 200 miles in <24 hours (Yannis Kouros 188
    miles).

Actually, Mike Sweeney was in the lead through the 72-mile split.

Keep in mind that splits are just snapshots, which I think may be
representative in early stages this year (at least for leaders).
Particularly in races like BW involving rests (can leave course for rest
or medical treatment), runners may leapfrog.

Actually, according to one of Hawke's crew members he arrived about 15
    sec in front of Jurek.

Based on assorted crew members' reports, it sounds like a lot of things
happened to a lot of people between miles 72 and 90 - blisters, heat, etc.

According to one of Hawke's crew, Hawke apparently passed Jurek when
Jurek took about a 1/2 hr break in his "ice cooler" (about mile 73).
Hawke also passed Sweeney, who was weaving going up to Father Crowley
Pass (about mile 83). Jurek then caught up with Hawke (about mile 89) -
making up about 30 min of time in 1.5 hr. According to crew, Hawke
wanted to be 1st to at least 1 checkpoint, so re-passed Jurek and
arrived about 15 sec before him. Then 'Jurek cruised by and announced to
his crew that "Now I'm going to kick some ass"' - and he did.

Another Hawke crew comment: "(By the way, watching Jurek run is an
astonishing spectacle - the guy is really in a class of his own). "

BTW, Hawke was about 65 min faster than last year.

wanted to be 1st to at least 1 checkpoint, so re-passed Jurek and
arrived about 15 sec before him.
