I'm 31 and didn't know what it was called until a few years
ago, but I now know I have IBS, irritable bowel syndrome. I
experienced what I feel is bad doctoring and wanted to get
some opinions. I went to our family practice physician 2
months ago complaining of having to go to the bathroom a lot
(6 times a day usually). He said I should see a colorectal
physician. So I went to a middle eastern doctor who speaks
bad english. He recommended a colonscopy. So I endured a
horrible procedure and had to pay $500 (my insurance
deductible) and nothing was found to be wrong with my colon.
(not that I'm complaining about that).
Anyway, at the follow-up to the colonscopy, the colorectal
doctor came in and said nothing was found. I asked if I had
IBS. He said I might. Then I asked if I should take fiber
therapy. He sort of laughed and said "you go to bathroom too
much and you want to take fiber to go to bathroom more?" He
gave me no prescriptions or advice.
I started taking fiber therapy and the IBS is practically
gone, 2 times a day is all I use the restroom now usually. I
just wished my family doctor would have recommended fiber
before a colonscopy. Also the colorectal doctor should be
more informed about his specialty to know that fiber is a
good cure for IBS. I just feel like I've been ripped off, as
a medical consumer by bad communication. A more nefarious
theory is that these doctors like to rob people by doing
unnecessary medical procedures.
