Backwards front brake?

  1. Front side-pull brakes on SWB recumbents can interfere with the chain
    path. On a bike equipped with road calipers, one might naively think
    this could be solved simply by flipping the brake around and mounting
    it behind the fork. (After all, the rear brake on a road bike is
    mounted "backwards"!) But, to quote from an old Cyclo-Pedia catalog,
    this could be dangerous:

    "My first thought was to mount the brake to the back side of
    the front fork, but I realized that if I applied the front
    brake very hard the wheel might be pulled from the front
    fork dropouts by the braking action. The front brake must be
    mounted on the front of the front fork."

    But how likely is this? Does moving the braking "grab point"
    back on the rim a mere 3 or so inches really alter the
    various braking torques enough to lead to dropout disaster?

    So my real question is: how much risk do I take by reverse-
    mounting my front brake to improve cable routing?

  2. Ron The front brake on Rotator Tigers are mounted on the
    back of the fork. Makes for more clearance to the riders
    heel. Speedy

  3. I have over six monthe experience with the front brake
    mounted on the rear of the fork. I have had zero problems.
    Be aware you have to drill the rear hole oversize and shim
    the front hole with some small diameter tubing.

    Caveats: I don't live in the mountain. Nor do I race, per
    se. I resent any of my energy wasted as braking heat.

    FWIW, Lightning Cycle Dynamics reverse mounts the brakes on
    all bent forks that are equipped with side-pull calipers.

    If you are concerned about cable routing, and have brakes
    bosses for 'V' brakes, Cane Creek makes a model (DC-5) that
    can be reversed so that the cable can be routed on the left
    side of the frame.

  5. This was standard on Kingcycles fitted with Magura rim
    brakes. I don't believe the forks were in any way special,
    and I used mine almost daily for about ten years thus
    equipped without being killed...

  6. My 2001 Vision Saber had the front brake mounted on the back
    of the fork. The threaded adjuster and nut were replaced w/
    a length of ss housing and a cable adjuster approx. 3 inches
    away from the brake. My 2004 Saber showed up w/ an aluminum
    fork and the front brake mounted on the front of the fork.
    There is a block that is screwed to the brake arm below the
    former position of the cable adjuster. This block is where
    the cable housing ends. So far, the chain does not interfere
    w/ the brake cable and housing while pedaling.

    This has the whiff of Complete Bollocks about it. Thorn
    mounted SunTour XC SE calipers on the front of tandems by
    brazing the bosses on the backs of the fork legs with no
    problems. As long as the rake fits, I really can't see why
    it should be an issue. If you are brave enough take it to
    rec.bicycles.tech, but I would just try it and see.
