It seemed like nobody else had their decals covered up, all the other
Olympic RR pics on Graham Watson's site show other riders with their
    frame decals uncovered.

"Coppi" is interpreted as the name of the manufacturer.

Frame manufacturer is different to sponsor.
The labels that were covered up on the Bianchis were the Alessio labels.

Did you look at the photo?

No logos at all ... And on the team bikes, it doesn't say "Alessio" on the
head tube or down tube, it says "Bianchi" ...

Bianchi in black was on Backstedt's frame, clearly visible on the seat
tube on the live TV coverage I was watching. We were having a debate
about this here, why it would be sensible to cover up the down tube logo
and leave the seat tube logo and even the logos on the wheels visible.
Then the comments on the live CN coverage made sense....officials taping
up logos on the start line and the comment about the Alessio label on
    the down tube.

But I'm happy to be definitively wrong in this case.

As far as I know, equipment logos are ok, but other logos an individual
may carry are not, unless that logo belongs to a company that sponsors the
Olympics, too. That's Olympic rule. No one covers up logos on, say, tennis
racquets. (I wanted to write "rackets" there, as it seemed more
appropriate.) But individual countries may have different rules that they
apply due to sponsorship concerns. A few years ago, there was, for example,
a bit of a tempest over the Nike sponsored basketball guys on the US team
wearing Reebok logos on their uniforms (or warm-up suits - I don't remember
which). This may be one of those situations. I was looking for a clear shot
of another Danish rider to see if their bike was similarly taped.

I may have given people a bum steer here in the heat of the moment, so to
speak. The taping was inconsistent for a start - some bikes had just one
logo, others had four. And on looking at the normal Alessio-Bianchi bikes,
it seems that it was one of the *Bianchi* logos that was taped over. Maybe
the officials ran out of tape ;-)

I suspect that Backstedt or his support crew misintrpreted the rules
    and over-applied them.

    Because of which meaning?

    # A loud distressing noise.

As you can see, the Alessio-Bianchi bikes clearly say "Bianchi" on the
    downtube, rather than "Alessio" ....

I can only assume they taped up the excess logos because they are either a)
too big (ha!), or b) because Bianchi is part of the trade team's name, it's
a sponsor, rather than a supplier.

In the World Championships, there's a rule stating how large sponsor's names
can be on clothing, etc ... I'm sure it's similar in the Olympics.

I heard the racers were forced to eat 'burgers as food during the race.

Well, if you've seen (or heard) a women's match in recent years, you'd
certainly have to think the first one was appropriate. But you could be
right on the "all three" count.

yep I seem to remember that the Telekom Pinerellos were all taped over
at Sydney as well. Silly since tha Olympics are really just a huge
Coke/Mickey D's ad.. at least here in the states.
