Hello out there. My name is Bill and would like to ask a question. I went on
Atkins' in 2001 at the weight of 292 lbs. that was Jan.'01 by Sept. of '01 I
was down to 215 and really doing great. That lasted 3 years then last fall I
fell off (along with my wife) and now I feel like a bloated fish and weighed
today (I have been afraid to weigh) at 251! I am disgusted. I can not seem
to get back on the "Wagon" has anyone else had this happen to them. My wife
ordered the 6 week body makeover by Michael Thurman, in reviewing this (We
have 6 weeks money back offer) it seems to be a cross between low carb and
low fat south beach diet. My wife is feeling down,as I am too, very
restrictive, egg whites tuna and grapefruit, and eat many times a day. Well
enough of that I am sure that many of you are familiar with this and would
like some very honest opinion about this diet. Can anyone help. Thank you.

You need to quit trying to lose weight, because you just don't have the
necessary intestinal fortitude. You're wasting your time, and everyone
else's also.--

Go to the Atkins website or any other low carb sites and check them
out. LCing has changed a bit since 2001. And ignore JC - he is a big
poopy head.

I can relate to that Bill 🙂 I did brilliantly on Atkins the first time I
did it, then 'fell off the wagon' after my Mum passed away.... eventually
putting back on all I had lost 🙁
I restarted LC earlier this year and managed to budge 22lbs in about
7weeks... then got busy with life and focused less on watching my carb
intake, yet making better 'bad' choices when I ate something that wasn't
really LC (pretty much stuck to Low GI). Luckily for me I managed to
maintain the 22lb loss, but didn't take any more off until I started getting
tough with myself just under 2 weeks ago and got back into LC properly...
now I'm down another 5lbs 🙂 My favourite tip, apart from making sure you
drink enough water, is that sometimes the scales don't show much at all, so
measure yourself with a tape measure in various places (I suggest neck,
upper arms, bust, under bust, waist, hips, & upper thighs) then remeasure
each week in the same places and watch it melt away 🙂 -

DON'T, so I never say never. It happens to LOTS of people. I HAVE had
problems in the past with restarting other diets such as Jenny Craig,
Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, etc. I think it's a common phenomenon. I
would start out all enthusiastic and lose weight and then eventually
start back to my old habits. It's like "Well, I didn't DIE when I
cheated, I just gained weight again" and, for some reason, that makes it
so much harder to do it again because you KNOW you can cheat. It's not
particularly logical, but there it is. THIS time around, however, I've
stuck with it for over 2 years and have no plans to change it even when
I reach goal because I FEEL so much better -- at this point in my life
(and after feeling like [censored] for so many years), that's WAY more
important to me than looking better (which, don't get me wrong, is also
VERY nice :-) It's a whole different mindset than what I had with
previous diets because this time *I* am in control of what I eat and I
don't feel at all deprived because I'm eating GOOD food. In fact, I
feel like I've been liberated! It's weird -- it's almost like I'm
PARTNERING with the food now, rather than clashing with it all day every
day and feeling like a slave to it. It's not a truce between me and
food -- it's positive teamwork.Quoted message said:

Bill and Robin Duncan in Norfolk,NebraskaI don't know anything about the body makeover diet other than what
you've just told me, but if you're stuck with egg whites, tuna and
grapefruit, you are HIGHLY unlikely to stick with it. HIGHLY. I'd get
my money back, if I were you, and turn to something that you can live
with for the long term. Also, back to that mindset thing, I think it makes a WORLD of difference
if you are eating a certain way because you WANT to do it, not because
you feel like you HAVE to do it. Mind you, I didn't start OUT thinking
that way when I first started doing Atkins, but it didn't take long for
me to realize how much better I felt eating low-carb and how lucky I was
to have given it a try. It's truly turned my LIFE around.P.S. I'm not trying to turn this into a discussion about me, Me, ME --
I'm just hoping some of my enthusiasm is catching and motivational :-)--

Thank you all for the kind words I am reading them all the time, keep them
coming I'll weigh in when I get back from Wyoming on Sunday and hope to see
more responses. I have lost 4 pounds in 2 days now, I have been
experimenting with ground turkey, making home made sausage chili etc.. I
eat a little red meat but I prefer turkey, chicken, fish, pork. I do sneak a
carrot every once in a while. Getting off the sugar now for 4 days has been
a challenge but I am starting to feel better, I can not afford the Atkin's
supplements so I have been taking Centrum Carb assist, is this good? Well
everyone I look forward to this group thanks again. Bill in Nebraska

Bill and Robin Duncan in Norfolk,NebraskaOne thing that's occurred to me about weight loss and dieting, is that
its at least a two-fold probem: 1) the dieting and learning new
food/lifestyle habits, and 2) focus and discipline. The second one is
the killer for met.I'd start out all hyped up and enthused with good intentions and
usually do a good job while I was focused on it, then real life would
lure my attentions away and that's when I'd stray. But isn't that the
way it is with most things/goals we set up? The 'newness' of the task
is an attraction that wears away in time and is the real problem for
me at least, and not the program. When JC comes along and post his
stuff it angers lots of people, but that anger snaps us back to
reality and the goals I've set. In that sense, he's doing a service
to the group. I think Atkins is really a more natural, balanced way
to do things, but ultimately won't work in the long run without the
selfdiscipline. HTH 🙂bmcky

You need to quit trying to lose weight ...JCdK is irritating and simple minded, but there is often
a kernel of truth in his suggestions. I trimmed his post
down to what I beleive to be his kernel of truth in this
case.It can't be about "trying" nor can it be about "to lose
weight". You did great when you were trying and you
lost weight. But eventually you lost interest in trying. It has to be about making changes that you can stick to
permanently and then it has to be about making those
new habits permanent. For Atkins phase 1 (Induction) is
not sustainable by most people while phase 4 (Maintenance)
is sustainable by many. Doing stuff to an extreme tends
to be not sustainable while doing stuff that's mostly
moderate tends to be sustainable and sure enough the
difference between Induction and Maintenance is extreme
versus mostly moderate.Think about why you fell off the wagon. Was it because
you were trying something that you thought took effort,
or was it because low carbing was simply the way you ate?In the short term it's about what you do. In the long
term it's about what you think eventually becoming what
you feel and about what you feel eventually becoming what
you do.Low carbing can't be a diet. It has to be simply the way
you prefer to eat. Delicious veggies not junk. Grass
is for cows. Consider the attitude in those sound bites.
Move yourself into that mental attitude, and you won't
be getting back on the wagon. You'll just be returning
to what you prefer. That's a decision that the order is
do temporarily, think permanently, feel permanently, do
permanently. You already know that the do temporarily part works. You
only regained part of your loss, so you're already partially
downt he road of moving thought into feeling into permanent
action. Now do that cycle again and make more of it
permanent. You have done it therefore you can do it again
and do it better. For you it is now entirely mental decisions
and attitude. You've got bedrock certainty that it works
to build upon. -
There is a difference between being simple minded and being able to express
your mind simply. If you can't do the latter, you are probably the former.--

Oh yeah! I did the 6 Week Makeover, too, LOL...couldnt stay on it. All
my body type gets is CHICKEM. Plus, I just cant be bothered to eat that
many times a day....I mean....how many chicken tenders can a person
really stand? day after day?
The theoy sounded great....but the practice....nope, not for me.If you're having a hard time getting back on the LC wagon, I suggest you
first GET RID of everything not on the LC diet. Give it away. Stock up
on everything you CAN eat---lots of different kinds of meat, cheese and
bags of ready-to-eat salad. Dont eat out for the first two weeks.I find it helps to always have a bowl of hard boiled eggs in the fridge
for am immediate munch. A slice of sandwich ham smeared with a little
cream cheese, an HB egg and a dill pickle makes a pretty good "gotta
have something NOW" snack.Once you get past the first two days, you know it will get easier!
Remember---a couple days of LCing and the appetite begins to decrease.Good luck---hang in there

My favourite tip, apart from making sure you
drink enough water, is that sometimes the scales don't show much at all,
so
measure yourself with a tape measure in various places (I suggest neck,
upper arms, bust, under bust, waist, hips, & upper thighs) then remeasure
each week in the same places and watch it melt away 🙂Your mind can be your own worst enemy... I have found that, since I weight
train (adding lean muscle mass which ADDS pounds, offsetting fat loss
sometimes)
and also all my water consumption (I easily hit 64oz a day and then some;
generally
I drink nearly two gallons a day), the scales often do not really reflect
the fat
loss to my expectations. I have even put in a good week on both the diet AND
at the gym and saw the scales go UP a few ticks (!!!!!!).I invest in the stock market and have found that watching the tickertape
constantly
causes anxiety & makes you do stupid things... the "science of the wiggles"
they
call it; I have therefore found it best to not even weigh but once in a blue
moon,
and go more on my appearance (your tape measure idea is good)... and even
then
I refrain from staring in the mirror every 30 minutes to see if suddenly
some buldge
here or there has miraculously fallen off.My $.02 worth.

Well thanks again for the good advice. My wife and I are sending the 6 week
makeover back, some of it is good some of it is not, the sodium restriction
is good as we Americans eat too much salt, and that retains water, but I can
not eggs with out salt. I weigh in in the morning, last Wed. I was 251, so
we will see tomorrow. Anyone else out there ever tried the 6 week body
makeover and send it back?? Until later, Bill in Nebraska
