I just had back surgery and the Doc recommended I stop running so much and bike instead. I would be a newby who is 6' 4" and while I think I would enjoy offroad, I would probably stick to mostly trails and established paths not hardcore mountain biking. A local two-day MS 150 bike ride looks like an interesting goal to train for by Septpember. I stopped by the LBS and I still can't be properly measured as I was just cut on three days ago, but they did show me a Trek Crossrip. Money is an issue as we just dropped a ton of cash on medical bills. Thoughts on the Crossrip? Alternatives? Thanks for replies.

I have a Crossrip ordered at my lbs, should be in soon. I chose this bike because of the ability to mount racks and fenders, and it has the room for wide tires. I wanted something that would handle gravel and dirt easily but still be responsive on pavement. Also comes with disc brakes (a big plus)!
I plan on doing some loaded touring so the Crossrip was the best bike available for the money imho.
I chose the lower priced bike with the triple crank because I need some low gearing for touring purposes. -
the Crossrip at 999 euro is not a cheap bike, its quite good actually, closer to medium level than it is to entry level, you need an amount of flex on your back to ride a road bike, you can play with that changing the stem and handlebars position, as for size you need a 58 or 60cm bike for your size, or L to XL,

With a triple chainring and the gearing ratios that come with a Crossrip, you should be able to manage hills quite well.
