I note, with some concern, that during my absence rec.running has managed to misplace many of those
contributors who were capable of stringing together an amusing or interesting post. What have to
done with the corpse of McBrowse? You appear to have turned Common into a crack-monkey and Anders is
showing signs of scurrying off to return to his Nordic toe-bindings. Downie has slunk off into a
sulk since I was obliged to expose his hypocrisy and even Wobbot has fallen into a 'I hate Nikes and
stretching' pit of depression. Is it the time of year, or do I sense that darker forces are afoot?
And where have I been? 'Tis well that you ask, my dear friends. I have been motocrossing - we'll
call it mx for sake of brevity. What is mx? Well, basically it's riding round a 2-3 klm dirt track
on a big, noisy, knobbly-tyred motorcycle. Why? Well, why not? I've never ridden a mx bike before
and - life being what it is - if I didn't take the opportunity now it may never have presented
itself again. Is it fun? Sure is, if a little scary! In case you're tempted to have a go, I should
warn you that it does your legs and lower back no good at all. Trying to run 12k after a couple of
hours practicing on the mx bike was akin to the feeling of running on bloodied stumps - you simply
cannot feel anything significant below your hips. An interesting sensation but not one I'd recommend
if you're trying for a pb in your next race.
You'll be comforted to know that I'll be with you over the next few days so that we may exchange
pleasantries. If you have questions on running or mx, or fan mail, please ask here or send them to
the usual address.
It's nice to be home again.
Roger.
