Awards and souvenirs

Printed socks. I'd use them, unlike most of the other things you list.
Perhaps if they have a coolmax T-shirt, I'd take that.

I'd go for the enamelled pin. Or a non-enamelled pin.

I've got a couple dozen of the type sold by littleawards.com that I display
on some hanging ribbons. I know people who pin them to caps, vests, etc.,
and others who break off the pin backing and glue the disks to an
appropriate flat surface.

Patches have less potential to cause discomfort when attached to clothing,
but patches have to be sewn on. Although some patches can be ironed on, and
then lost once the iron-on adhesive wears out. ;-)

I've got enough T-shirts and water bottles. I don't wear caps or headbands.
Socks might be useful if they were the right kind, size, etc., but who
would look at the embroidery on my socks?

I'd go for a lapel type pin. I have plenty of t-shirts, socks, caps,
and water bottles and I think pins are just inherently more versatile
than patches. You can wear them on a cap one day and stick them on a
saddle bag the next. If the post breaks off you can epoxy them wherever
you'd like, say on your bike frame perhaps. Not too many bikes have
real honest to god head badges these days and a "bragging rights" pin
epoxied where the head badge would be raises those bragging rights to a
new level.

If the T-shirt is synthetic, that's a damn useful thing. Cotton shirts
kinda suck.

My own suggestions:
Logo tire levers
Logo helmet rain covers
Logo small vinyl wallets that can hold a couple credit cards and a
twenty
Small folded disposable rain ponchos, with a logo sticker on the pack

Tossup between water bottle and socks, but I'm a utilitarian sort of
person. I understand that not everyone is, though. If it's really a
"milestone" sort of event, it seems the best compromise is to have one
sort of "useful" premium (such as a coolmax shirt or a water bottle) and
one decorative token. That's pretty standard in the world of marathons,
but I have no idea if that's how it's done with bike centuries.

On our certified instructors' listserve, some guy just mentioned taking
the Effective Cycling class in 1984 (oroctored by yrs truly). He
bragged about how he got a patch, it was on his h'bar bag for ages, and
he still has the patch.

So guess what souvenir I'm partial to.

Somewhere (it's in the US so the somewhere is probably my boyfriend's
house) I've got a t-shirt from Crowne Plaza's Haikou resort.
Unfortunately, it is basically identical to their employee t-shirts and
there is nothing about it (except it's high incidence of being worn by
bike club members) to indicate that it had anything at all to do with a
biking event. And I think it's cotton.

Bikes that have been taken on the round-the-island trip get a series of
stickers along the frame reading (in Chinese, of course) this bike
completed the round-the-island ride in X year.
