I don't know the Avid Short, so, of course, I don't know what I'm
talking about (so what's new?) Nut do watch that the brake blocks are
not the type which slide into their holders, because if they are and
you put them in the wrong way round, then when you brake hard the pads
will neatly eject from their shoes and you will be, as they say
politely, stuffed.

Avid Shorty brakes are Cantilever, not 'V', so no noodle. The ones on my
wifes bike do not appear to be any different front or rear.
As someone else has said, if the blocks have replaceable rubbers,
then make sure they face the right way.

The ony difference I can hear is that the front one squeals like a
pig. I am tempted to swap them round to see if the squeal goes to the
rear.

I've looked quite closely at my set, and they do look very similar indeed.
I wasn't quite dedicated enough to take both sets off and compare side by
side though !

It's conceivable that something subtle like the mounting arrangements are
different, so I'd personally not be be inclined to risk it. You could try
ringing your potential supplier to ask. sjscycles do them and are
knowledgable and helpful. Conceivably they might be interchangeable under
some circumstances, but not others.
