Yeah, but what happened to McGee? I can't believe someone of his caliber
would quit so early..., or at all! He should've tried to finish even if he
wasn't really in the spirit of being competitive. It would've been one more
TdF under his belt and probably some good base training too. McEwen looked
comfortable in Yellow, tho, and he's doing great this year.

Sorry 'bout that. I didn't pick up on your frustration as a fan as the
reason for your comments. Given the dumb comments about Petacchi and Cipo
today, I thought this was more of the same.

As a rider, McGee absolutely did the proper thing by retiring from the race.
As I understand his pride, determination, and desire for success, I'm sure
he DNS'd only as the last option. Carrying on in the race would not have
been beneficial for him or FdJ. He risked making the injury worse and
prolonging the healing time by continuing. Base training would also be much
more beneficial when healthy. The experience of another TdF under those
conditions would not likely have much value to a healthy racer. Having him
continue would be an unnecessary drain to team resources, be it teammates
assisting him at times, staff having to wait for him at the finish, or to
adding to the fatigue of therapists and mechanics who would look after him.
Other than tactical advice, it was unlikely that McGee could have
contributed to the success of the team. As pack filler, he would have only
been shown on TV in a pitiful state much like Jimmi Casper last year with
his neck brace, something I'm sure he would rather not endure. McGee had
nothing to gain by continuing simply for the sake of continuing.

I'm not saying, "Good riddance." that he's out of the race. Quite the
contrary. I consider him to be a magnificent rider. I wish he could have
stayed in as well as Petacchi, and I wish riders like Vino could have
started, too. Makes for a much more enjoyable show.

When it comes to sport (any sport) we want to have a go, and if the podium
seems unattainable, so much the better.

It seems pretty much everyone in Oz must be a sportman given their
sucess in other areas. I know the Aussies have a long history in the
tour but it is still very impressive.

Having lived in the land of Oz since 1983, moved from Canada at age 12,
I can say there is one reason how we do it.

Sun, most of the country has great weather for 8 months of the year. The
other 4 are evenly split between really hot, 30 deg Celsius plus, or
unpleasently cold, 10 deg or less.😎

This give you lots of time to train or just have fun.🙂

spends money on elite sport through the AIS, whereas, (and I am sure

expenditure in the US.

The US gummint generally stays the heck out of sports, even when it is
in the sole position to mediate or legislate things. The use of
performance enhancing drugs is Sporting Fraud in many countries, but in
the US it gets a finger waggled at it and the gummint only expresses
interest in prosecution of use of outlawed drugs.

The argument goes that the sport will take care of itself. They do, but
sometimes I think a general law on doping or thuggery would give
authorities some teeth, after all, sports provides a lot of role models.
Shame so many of them aren't very good.

Admitatly 10 is upleasent when sitting around doing nothing, but quite
nice out on the bike. You get to play 'train' and make steam come out
your mouth, may not be funny here but it had a riding partner in stiches
a week ago.😄

One thing I do remember from Canada is the snow. Having only seen it
once in Australia, I can say i never want to see the stuff again.

When you go to the footy there's 40 blokes running around on the oval, (I'm
talkiing Aussie footy here), and 40 000 spectators sitting in the stands.
Obesity will disappear when we have 40 000 people running around on the oval
and only 40 people in the stands.
