Australian cyclists took steroids, claims senator
By Julian Linden
SYDNEY, June 18 (Reuters) - Australian track cyclists have allegedly been
using illegal steroids in a "shooting gallery" at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS), the Australian Parliament heard on Friday.
Senator John Faulkner told the parliament that up to six riders had been
injecting themselves with legal and prohibited substances after locking
themselves in a room at the AIS in Adelaide.
"Room 121 was used as an injecting room, or indeed as a shooting gallery, by
up to six cyclists locking themselves in, several nights a week, undetected
for months on end," Faulkner said.
"Why didn't the coaches and other staff twig that something untowards was
taking place?
"Cycling is, after all, one of the highest-profile sports to be at risk from
performance-enhancing drugs."
Faulkner said the allegations stemmed from an investigation by the Court of
Arbitration for Sport into Mark French, an 18-year-old Australian track
cyclist who was recently banned for two years for a doping office.
Faulkner said French had been introduced to various drugs, include a growth
hormone for horses, by senior riders at the AIS but was the only cyclist
charged over doping.
Australia's Federal Sports Minister Rod Kemp said he would order an
investigation into the claims.
"The Australian Government, let me make it absolutely clear, has a zero
tolerance policy in relation to drugs in sport - we will not tolerate it in
any shape or form," he said. Faulkner said the Australian Olympic Committee
was also looking into the case.

Right you are! I'd completely forgotten about that.

As I recall, the IOC made her undergo drug-testing (including gender
testing) at the Montreal Olympics. Mummy was reportedly not too chuffed.
