your post, I wouldn't have even been aware of it. I'm not at all sure what your beef is, but I don't
need your advice. I presume your post is in reference to my Monkey Island post alerting Ed to the
fact that his PC might possibly be infected with the Bugbear worm since it appeared from the email
header information that I was just one among many that received an email that I fully suspect Ed
wasn't even aware of. Unfortunately, that's how these worms work. Unfortunately, the "sender" is as

You may be chasing a chimera here. BugBear is rather unique in that it is able to spoof the sender's
address using a valid address book entry from the infected computer. So, chances are the worm was
sent not by Jim McNamara but by someone who has both of you in their address book. Read what
Symantec has to say about how the BugBear worm replicates itself:

"It retrieves the current user's email address and SMTP server from the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts

It then uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to all email addresses that it finds. The worm
also can construct addresses for the "From:" field using information that it harvests from the
infected computer. For example, the worm may find the addresses [email hidden], [email hidden] and [email hidden]. The
worm could create an email message addressed to [email hidden] and spoof the "From:" address, so that it
appears to come from [email hidden]. The spoofed address can also be a valid email address that the worm
finds on the system."

So you see, the best you can do in tracking down the real sender of a BugBear worm is to track it to
the IP address of the originating mail server (from the expanded e-mail header information) just as
you would a SPAM message, and then using tools like geektools.com or samspade.org to get the name
and e-mail address of someone at the sender's ISP to track it for you further. There's no way to
tell for sure by looking at just the message who sent it to you.

Sorry about the double reply. I think I got it right the second time around. A few more observations
I should make:

1. Monkey Island is not a Bulletin Board Service (BBS).
2. If by "Ed and company" you mean Ed Gin and Alan Arial, I am sick an tired of their

4. I can't prevent people from visiting my neighborhood. Should you desire to pay me a visit, let me

I'm not sure why Warren purged my previous post from this "UNMODERATED" forum. My post was made as a
courtesy to those potentially impacted. It was informative and should have been understood to have
been a service, rather that a disservice. Nothing in my post was the least bit inflammatory or
offensive. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to try to help people. With that said more about the
Bugbear worm follows...

Bugbear is a mass-mailing worm that harvests old e-mail messages from an infected system and sends
them to random e-mail addresses. In addition, the worm harvests e-mail addresses from the infected
computer's email address book and uses them to forge the sender (the "From:" line) of the e-mail.
The recipients of the email appear to receive the infected email from someone who was not the actual
sender (and is not the real Bugbear victim). The annoying thing about Bugbear is that it defames the
reputation of the apparent sender. Ed Gin's email is a case in point. His email address was
obviously forged and in this respect Ed was as much a victim as his recipients although I suspect
that someone in Ed's email address book is likely the party that is infected. I verified that Ed's
email was sent to another person listed in the email header information, so it appears that many
people received Ed's email. Though Ed's PC many not have been infected, I though it imperative that
he be made aware that emails were being sent that appeared to originate from his PC.

Macintosh owners needn't be alarmed as Bugbear is a Windows specific worm. Windows owners are
affected only if they click on the attachment or have an unpatched system. Emails sent by Bugbear
uses the IFRAME vulnerability exploit in unpatched systems. This vulnerability allows an HTML
document, such as an email message, to execute automatically when the document is viewed by an email
client (such as Outlook and Outlook Express), that use Internet Explorer to view an HTML formatted
email message. This flaw in IE's security model has been addressed and a patch for the IFRAME
vulnerability is available from Microsoft
(www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q323759ie/default.asp).

Here's a heads up. Another Windows specific mass-mailing worm that poses as a Microsoft Windows
Security Update is in circulation. Within the past 8 hours, I have received 7 such emails with
different official sounding senders and subjects. The email itself is very official looking. This
worm terminates running antivirus and firewall software making the infected PC even more vulnerable
to more infections. The above-mentioned patch will prevent this worm from taking advantage of the
IFRAME vulnerability. Remember this ... Microsoft does not email its customers with security update
information, so don't be taken in.

I trust that the intent of my post will not be misconstrued. Should Warren chose to delete this post
and deprive the readership of this information, he will be doing a disservice to all who could be
affected and might benefit from this information.

Just to set some facts straights proving Jim McNamara is incorrect and a liar once again:

1) My email list is not suseptible to the Bugbear worm because we are MAC based in our
DTP business.

2) No worms can be propagated from my computer CONTRARY to what Mr. McNamara has insinuated on the
Monkey Island board.

3) Out of over 400 members in our email list, not a single one has mentioned to me any problem
originating from his post.

4) The last 5 years since I chose to part company with Jim, he has never sent me anything
"helpful."

And finally, I have a sneaking suspicion regarding the identity of this latest attempt to spite me.
The one consolation is, at least this effort doesn't involve his favorite ...... linseed oil.

Just to set the record straight, something Jim McNamara doesn't know....I've been Mac based for

What ever transpired with his post on this newsgroup has not affected our email account in anyway, I
haven't received a SINGLE complaint from over 400 members in our email list.

The list which was inadvertently sent out was a few years ago which I asked members to delete, and I
currently have the ONLY up to date list of exactly 438 members.

Obviously, someone....and I have a sneaking suspicion who it is..... thinks it'll cause problems for
our membership.

I'm not sure why Warren purged my previous post from this "UNMODERATED" forum. My post was made as
a courtesy to those potentially impacted. It was informative and should have been understood to
have been a service, rather that a disservice. Nothing in my post was the least bit inflammatory
or offensive. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to try to help people. With that said more about the
Bugbear worm follows...

Bugbear is a mass-mailing worm that harvests old e-mail messages from an infected system and
sends them to random e-mail addresses. In addition, the worm harvests e-mail addresses from the
infected computer's email address book and uses them to forge the sender (the "From:" line) of
the e-mail. The recipients of the email appear to receive the infected email from someone who was
not the actual sender (and is not the real Bugbear victim). The annoying thing about Bugbear is
that it defames the reputation of the apparent sender. Ed Gin's email is a case in point. His
email address was obviously forged and in this respect Ed was as much a victim as his recipients
although I suspect that someone in Ed's email address book is likely the party that is infected.
I verified that Ed's email was sent to another person listed in the email header information, so
it appears that many people received Ed's email. Though Ed's PC many not have been infected, I
though it imperative that he be made aware that emails were being sent that appeared to originate
from his PC.

Macintosh owners needn't be alarmed as Bugbear is a Windows specific worm. Windows owners are
affected only if they click on the attachment or have an unpatched system. Emails sent by Bugbear
uses the IFRAME vulnerability exploit in unpatched systems. This vulnerability allows an HTML
document, such as an email message, to execute automatically when the document is viewed by an
email client (such as Outlook and Outlook Express), that use Internet Explorer to view an HTML
formatted email message. This flaw in IE's security model has been addressed and a patch for the
IFRAME vulnerability is available from Microsoft
(www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q323759ie/default.asp).

Here's a heads up. Another Windows specific mass-mailing worm that poses as a Microsoft Windows
Security Update is in circulation. Within the past 8 hours, I have received 7 such emails with
different official sounding senders and subjects. The email itself is very official looking. This
worm terminates running antivirus and firewall software making the infected PC even more
vulnerable to more infections. The above-mentioned patch will prevent this worm from taking
advantage of the IFRAME vulnerability. Remember this ... Microsoft does not email its customers
with security update information, so don't be taken in.

I trust that the intent of my post will not be misconstrued. Should Warren chose to delete this
post and deprive the readership of this information, he will be doing a disservice to all who
could be affected and might benefit from this information.

Just to set the record straight, something Jim McNamara doesn't know....I've been Mac based for
years with our DTP business. And subsequently, any virus will not originate from my computer

What ever transpired with his post on this newsgroup has not affected our email account in anyway,
I haven't received a SINGLE complaint from over 400 members in our email list.

The list which was inadvertently sent out was a few years ago which I asked members to delete, and

Gee, I don't know Larry. I feel right at home on this thread myself. All the vituperation is balm
for my soul. I am taking notes on Jim's posts especially as he is a tiger. I can see that I have a
ways to go myself in order to get up to their high standard. I mean, what else would I be reading if
I weren't reading this thread. It is all about human nature and the way things are in the world. We
should all be following this thread in order to learn something about ourselves. It is Psychology

other Ed are going on and on about, but I admire your style enormously. I am taking notes and hope
