publicity for it. many scientists are saying that is not that bad for your health.

i would like to know if the atkins diet is so bad for you then why has there been so much good
publicity for it. many scientists are saying that is not that bad for your health. The Adkin's diet works for certain short term reasons but fails for other long term reasons.
The human body burns sugar for energy and that energy must be obtained from what the human eats.
This is the body's energy menu:
First Choice: Sugars are used as sugars.
Second Choice: Carbohydrates are next and are readily converted to sugars by the body.
Third Choice: Fats are used for energy by various enzymatic routes.
Fourth and Last Choice: Proteins can be converted to sugar type chemicals and used for energy, but
normally this occurs only in starvation. A body burning protein for energy is like following a
diesel fueled bus where you have to smell the exhaust. It is not clean and it is not nice. This is why the Adkin's diet works to cause weight loss. By giving the body only protein to generate
its energy you have cast it into a starvation situation. The body will use all existing sugar
reserves, then all carbohydrate sources, and then the fat reserves BEFORE the body will utilize
protein for energy. Short term, the human will lose weight from fat. You have forced the body to do
this and keep you alive. However, there are long term consequences. All modern medical studies focus on short term
results. With the Adkin's diet you will lose fat and weight short term. Long term, we have no
reliable results. However, you can predict certain long term results.
The colon will become alkaline and not remain acidic. This promotes all the colon diseases known to
man, including cancer, but it does take time. Short term, if you do not consume enough vegetables,
you may become constipated from the dense stool produced and may develop hemorrhoids. The Adkin's diet can be used to lose weight short term by placing the body in a psuedo
"starvation" situation, but cannot be recommended long term and cannot be recommended for those
who value their health.DrC PhD.

Long term you don't get as good access to many nutrients that you need in food typically many of
these cancer fighters.
I.E. the diet could be potentially dangerous in the long term as it removes the nutrients which
lower your risk from cancer. (I've heard it also makes your sweat smell like a melon via
ketosis) Anth"drceephd" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Also if you consult a good nutritionalist he/she can sort your diet out to lose you weight and
maintain the weight. This will be a long term effort rather than gaining the weight again after a
few months. There's also some evidence (from spiders/mice/monkeys) that caloric restriction can
increase lifespan and lower disease risk if done properly. (google caloric restriction) Anth -
Consider the diets of Eskimos (Inuits) Mostly Meat, fat as I understand it. Certainly there are long
periods of time where vegetables are scarce due to hardend soil and low temperature. How are they able to survive if what you are saying is true?

Hi Eskimos ingest a large quantity of grasses and other vegetable matter in their foods. Anth

I agree with much of what you say, doctor C. It does not seem sensible to have sudden swings in body
metabolism by, for example, suddenly cutting out all carbohydrate. However there are problems
arising from recent changes in the diets of advanced societies, together with the fact that very few
people now do manual work all day long. In my local supermarket the fast selling bread all contains
sugar, and very little fibre. It is now confectionery rather than food.In other words, it is sensible to reduce fast carbohydrates as much as possible but, for example,
keep eating fruit like traditional apples and grapefruit that have not been hybridised to increase
their sugar content, and also green vegetables for their fibre and folate.Dr Atkins took us in the right direction, but the trouble with all the best selling diets is that in
order to sell they seem to have to be extreme. It really is not so difficult. If your diet is optimum for you, then your blood glucose will not be
elevated. If it is elevated then you need to cut down on the fast carbohydrates. There are companies
practically giving away glucose monitors in the hope that you will buy their test strips for life.
Around (and it is approximate) 5 mmol/L or 90 dl/L fasting plasma glucose is optimal. A raised level
of 5.5 mmol/L or 100 dl/L is now considered pre-diabetic. Once you get into this higher range you
are starting to lose control of appetite, and insulin starts to become less effective. It is then
hard work to get the numbers down again. If you can get and remain in the lower optimal range you
will regain shape without hardly thinking about it.So, long term, read your fasting plasma glucose weekly until it is optimal and stable, and throw
away the weight scales.I think the Inuit have been referred to. I don't know how many of them are still following the
traditional lifestyle, but if they are, they are doing so much physical work every day that their
blood glucose will never go up whatever they eat. Also, if they still wear animal skin clothing they
are living all day in a tropical micro-climate so they sweat like hell, which is a sure way of
maintaining good health. All we have to do is realise that we are living in a new world where little physical effort is
required of us, but we have food in plenty. There have been few, if any, examples of societies like
ours in previous history. We have to use the large brains that we have been provided with, to be a
bit sensible about how we look after ourselves. If we do this we will not pass our bad habits on to
the next generation. These ideas in relation to health and the incidence of chronic disease are explored further on my

Simply because you are not fully informed. The Inuits prepare for the long winter by storing up food just as I did as a youth on the farm.
Part of this is dried berries and pemican, for example. They also eat the blubber, if available,
raw. The prize part of a Caribou is the stomach and its contents of veggies which goes to the wife
of the hunter.Keep in mind also that the Inuits are so osteoporitic they were almost gone by age 25. Ever seen an
Eskimo wife smile? ( no teeth )DrC PhD.
