I sometimes read the Atkins negative propaganda posted here in this NG.
Scary stuff if it is true...
Do you are anybody you know been harmed by the Atkins diet?
Good question. Four years ago I lost 50 lb. (220 to 170) on "Protein
Power", similar to Atkins without all of the hype and commercialism. 170
lb. was a plateau and to maintain weight I had to stay with Phase II (On
Going Weight Loss). For the past 30 years I have had annual lab tests for
SMAC (was once SMAC 8 but I believe it is now around 30) and CBC. A few
readings were always borderline or departed slightly from average but were
consistent for me before, throughout, and after the weight loss experience.
Last year I experienced congestive heart failure. I was able to avoid
bypasses but had a few of my arteries reamed out and now have four stent
implants and I need to take anticoagulant and statin drugs . The
cardiologist recommended I switch to a weight control program managed by a
local hospital. It looks almost exactly like the South Beach program. I
have since regained 20 lb. and can maintain that fairly easily. But to lose
weight I need to restrict portion size to reduce calorie intake which is
difficult.
Congestive heart failure due to inefficient heart function may be due to
genetic factors, narrow arteries, arteries hardening with age, plugged up
arteries, atrial fibrillation, defective heart valve, and probably many
other factors and the PP/Atkins program may not be a factor. But no way
will I ever go back to a high cholesterol eating regimen just in case it may
be a contributor.
