  1. Hi LCers,

I successfully lost weight on the Atkins diet a couple of years ago (about
40 lbs), stalled and went off the diet for about a year. I have attempted to
start the diet again to lose that last 8 or so pounds, but am having a
terrible time sticking to it. After a day on the diet, I have an almost
uncontrollable craving for carbs and end up totally bingeing on them. Has
anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

If you have only 8 lbs to lose, even Dr. Atkins doesn't think you should
do induction. Sheeit, just skip a dessert or take an extra walk!

I would never recommend to someone to start Atkins to lose 8 or 10 lbs.

I would tell you to plunge directly into Stage 2 or 3 instead.

    Eat Less
    Exercise More
    Vitamins
    Sensible Eating

Good luck.... it shouldn't be too hard to sort of "pick up from where
you left off and keep on going".

    Yes, Carb Cravings... again.

Snack on something like baby corn ears (shole) with french onion sour
cream dip, or even butter or cheese instead.

    --
    1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book
    2) Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable..... Chapter 22 title, Atkins book
    3) Don't Diet Without Supplimental Nutrients... Chapter 23 title, Atkins
    book
    4) A sensible eating plan, and follow it. (Atkins, Self Made or Other)

  6. The amino acid L-Glutamine in large doses (like 10 grams) helps some people
    avoid carb cravings.

I have a hunch there is more to the problem. Perhaps you should review the
    book or website info.

To me the talk of binging suggests that you may have been letting yourself
get too hungry. Sometimes it is more important to get what you do eat
right, and the foods to avoid are then less of a problem.

    Yes -- don't consider it a diet -- it's a lifestyle. If it's a
temporary thing for you, then the weight loss will probably also be
temporary. We don't like to hear that, but that tends to be the case.
You don't have to keep the carbs or calories at a weight loss level once
you reach your goal weight, but you DO have to keep track of them and
keep them under control. Of course, that's easy for ME to say because I
haven't quite REACHED my goal yet :-) OTOH, I've been doing this for
two years and have a totally different mindset now than I had before.

As far as the cravings go -- it IS really tough the first couple of
days, but after that they should DRAMATICALLY diminish. It really IS a
matter of willpower for those 2-3 days, though. If you can, make sure
there aren't any high-carb foods that are easily available (i.e., get
rid of them if they are in your home), keep low-carb foods around and
ready to eat at a moment's notice (pre-cooked, if necessary) such as
    hard-boiled eggs, chicken, cream cheese/salsa, cream cheese/cocoa
powder/Splenda). That you have an alternative if you find yourself
reaching for something that's easy and in front of you. You might find
yourself waffling, but if they are ready to eat NOW, you might have just
enough willpower to make the right decision until the cravings subside.

What Atkins said was that you have to change the way you eat. You have to
change the way you look at food. You have to make lifestyle changes---not
just "go on a diet for awhile" and then go back to eating the way you were
eating when you were overweight---and then "going back to Atkins" to lose
the weight again. Can you lose weight again? Yes, but you have to realize
that you gained back the weight by going back to your old ways. That's the
only way to keep the weight off: change the way you eat!

You "head for the carbs" because you didn't internalize what Dr. Atkins said
in the first place. You need to change the way you look at food. You have to
read about low glycemic carbs and high glycemic carbs and know the
difference and then change your attitude about bingeing on carbs.

Compared to the Maintenance phase that has been in the
books since the 1993 edition, that sucks as a long term
plan. It does approximate the Maintenance phase as
described in the 1972 edition, though, depending on just
how far off the plan you were. Gaining 8 in a year
doesn't seem all that badly off plan.

My theory is folks get spoiled with just how easy Atkins
is when you've been on it for a while. Then you try to
get back on the wagon and it takes about the same amount
of effort and determination as it did the first time
around. Remember the determination it took the first
time, remember how soon the cravings disappeared, remember
that you DID it once and know you can do it again. Then
start and hang on until the cravings are past again.

IIRC, he said that if you only have a total of 20lbs or less to lose, it
was not the ideal way to go.
