Sad news but I think we all expected it.

I'm heading to Georgia in the morning to watch him in the Tour de
Georgia. At least I'll get to see him race once before he retires.

Actually, Bob, I replied to Ken (who was replying to Maggie), but I see your
point now. Did Gretzsky hang on after he was a bit washed up? I had
forgotten about Jordan -- not as bad as [censored] Mays, but he /was/ well past
his best. Still, Mike Tyson's in a (sad) class all by himself. (Well,
almost. There's Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, other names I can't
spell...)

His stated reason for quitting was to spend more time with his children. I
don't think he'll give up the lifestyle of a professional cyclist to embrace
the lifestyle of a professional (insert your sport here).

Everyone yells at me when I talk about age, but there is something to

this year but I also would not take a bet against him. After bicycling
he could well take up marathon running with his endurance and leg
strength. Triathlon is what I heard he did before the bout with cancer
and if he can build up the arms for swimming he might well be a serious
contender in that sport. 33 years old is not over the hill by a long
shot if you have the motivation. Many of the sports retirees at 35 or so
are there because of impact injuries or sprains, torn ligaments, etc.
Think full contact football, hockey, basketball and you will know why 35
is a burnout age. Non contact endurance sports are a whole different game.

Why on earth would he do that to himself?

Tri's train longer hours than cyclist's do! At least competing at ironman
distances. Lance has plenty of endurance, sure. He also has a sprint like nobody
in the tri world EVER had. Why take up a sport that doesn't use your advantages.
Why take up a sport that in addition to all the other ailments he's dealt with
also adds shin splints, heel spurs and what all else in the way of repetitive
impact injuries. It'd take five years to reshape his body to be competitive and
he'd still be old and even older. Geez, let the guy retire and go do benefit
rides and local Crits and Crosses for fun.

The highest level of CHESS players usually retire at 35. It ain't just the
collision sports.

Just so you know, Maggie, AFAIK Namath came to terms with his alcoholism
after that humiliating episode on national TV, and has been sober for some
time now (well over a year I think). Booze is an equal opportunity
destroyer, and while I've never been a huge "Broadway Joe" fan, I admire his
courage in facing his problem and, hopefully, changing his life for the
better.

I did not know he went for help. My apologies. I also admire anyone
who faces their problems to change their life. I wish him the best. I
always liked the guy and it was sad to see him acting the fool at his
age. It was sad to see him that way. Very sad. I feel the same way
about Billy Joel. He just never seems to get it together, no matter

He is young enough, and likely wealthy enough, he could do whatever the
heck he wants, going into another sport, unlikely, if he has brains, he
could go to University get a degree in something, and do something
totally different.

The former sports stars you feel sorry for, are the guys, who are too

wanted in their sport.
