The thing I find so ironic was Bush stopping a bill in his first year
which, again would have required Detroit to improve fuel efficiency.
Now we see how it comes back to bite Detroit in the [censored], consumers and
extend reliance on foreign energy sources. Remember, people gotta buy
cars, whatever the efficiency, and if Detroit had taken it more
seriously the high price at the pump wouldn't be hurting them as badly
for relying on sales of SUV's to last forever. Seems everyone expected
1973 not to ever happen again and didn't foresaw the emergence of China
as an economic juggernaut. Lastly, whatever you drive, if it consumes
petrol, you are in competition for that commodity, not just with
emerging economies, but your fellow drivers.

If only we could go back to the good old days, like the Middle Ages,

Industrial Revolution Era London, where coal fired factories spewed so

Detroit has responded to demands to make cars more fuel efficient over
the decades....modern cars are much more fuel efficient and emit less
pollutants than ever before. I think Bush recognized that Detroit
shouldn't have to retool their factories every time the environmental
whackos get their panties in a wad about fuel efficiency. The reason
why detroit has a hard time selling cars is they are overpriced.
Notice that as soon as GM began their "employee discount" offering,
sales skyrocketed.

I think the Hybrid cars, as they improve in design and become less
costly, will be a driving force in reducing our reliance on foreign
oil. The hybrids are starting to show some actual performance, which
will be key to a lot of drivers as they look to buy new cars.

A sign of the times? I break my clavicle and get letters expecting me
to be indigent and offering services to get the state or county to help
foot the bills... Granted with my deductable the way it is I may yet

Sadly GM and Ford effecively trail Toyota. Ford at least licensed the
technology the Prius employs.

Honda had a prototype in the news about a year back which would dust
about any sports car on the road and still average 40 mpg overall.
Where's the US lead in technology, besides building 4WD cows?

Maybe not directly, but he did sign a bill some years back relaxing air
and water quality industrial emissions. Good thing all us cyclists are
out there filtering higher quantities of both through our bodies for the
good of our friends and neighbors.

It's true that Lance never won the other major tours, but Lance is
great champion who will rank among other tdf winners.

But Lance is not on the same level as Hinault or Merckx. Lance should
be respected for having the humility to admit it unlike some other
American tdf winner.

That said I am still a bit disappointed that Lance did not try to
accomplish more, especially in the fall season. Hinault and Merckx have
made similar comments.

The one thing I respect most about Lance is his leadership in cycling.
Lance has shown a superb degree of professional conduct for tdf winner.

The number of sucessfu US pros in europe has shown that Lance is making
a difference.
