LOL The only people I've heard call red (tomato) sauce "gravy" are

Yes, to both. Tomato sauce is more generic, can be any of many
different cooked combinations. Tomato gravy, aka red gravy, typically
refers to an Italian family recipe for sauce which may or may not
contain meat. The red gravy that I learned from an Italian family
features pork shoulder, Roma tomatoes, bell peppers, red pepper
flakes, onion, garlic, wine, several herbs and spices and the longest

Gravy is also called ragout. Sauce is typically a light tomatoes sauce
which is not seasoned or lightly seasoned. As for the divorce, well I mean
what the heck. People have done it for less. Through sickness and health
etc never said nothing about food.

Like a lot of food terminology questions, it depends on who you
talk to. No surprise there.

There is a sizable contingency of people, mostly in the Northeast
US, mostly of Italian descent in my experience, who refer to
tomato sauce as "gravy". For at least some of this group it
need not contain meat or meat products. In their world, a marinara
sauce can also be referred to as red gravy. I've also heard "tomato
gravy" used.

That doesn't include everyone, however. I'm Italian, from the NE,
but none in my family would ever refer to marinara sauce as gravy.
In our world, the term gravy is definitely not synonomous with
"sauce", in that gravy is always meat based.

So it is in common usage, but by a pretty small minority of
people.

I have an Italian friend who causes tomato pasta sauce gravy. One a few
episodes of the Sopranos various characters have called the tomato sauce
gravy.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in the south it's tomato
sauce if it contains tomatoes and spices and maybe broth, and it
becomes tomato gravy if you add milk or cream. In the south,
regardless of the base, it's sauce without milk or cream, and gravy
with. To our grandmothers, bechamel was cream gravy and veloute was
chicken gravy.

Depends on where you live. My Italian MIL calls it "red gravy". She lives
in PA. Here in WA, we call it tomato sauce.

I thought Ragout was a meat sauce?
