I think you are just expected to grow a pair and be able to take a few punches. You are posting with a psuedonym; why should you give a damn what people say about you. The fact that you get all apoplectic about things encourages it.

I think he has a point.

The moderation should be stepped up a notch I think, insults have a tendancy to get a bit out of hand especially on some of the more heated discussions.

After all, we are meant to be discussing things in a forum, this is not a match where you score points by insulting the opposition, insults should be out of place.

No offense meant, but most of what passes for so-called discourse on this forum is nothing more than rumor, insults and insinuations about people (Landis, Lance, Ulrich, etc...) who will not be on this forum defending themselves. 🙁

I think civility should be maintained at all times. When a poster crosses the line, then there should be repercussions. That thread bobke referenced had some nasty stuff in it that wasn't called for. There may be history between some of the characters but it's juvenile to keep fanning the flames.

This is the kind of stuff that causes forums to lose members.

Particularly when said poster isn't innocent of the charge of throwing around insults too.

It's okay to insult one's favorite rider, or even one's intelligence. Both seem to happen around here with predictable regularity. The direct, vulgar comments, though, are not only out of place but very much out of the spirit of the debates.

If you can't insult someone with style, don't bother. It's boring.

I tend to agree. When attacked in a personal manner, don't worry about it. The attacker is showing that they are lacking the means (or desire) to defend their argument in a logical manner.
Moderating them shows that they have been successful in their quest.
Either ignore them, or engage them, so that the games can continue.
Moderating brings in a value judgement. In an arena of free speech, even those you don't want to listen to get to state their case. We should all be self-moderating in these forums (in my opinion). If Bobke doesn't like what someone says (and I can understand why, from reading the quote), it is Bobke's choice as to whether to ignore the poster, engage with the poster, or depart from the forum. I don't see why a 3rd party should need to make that decision for him / her.
Now, where is Cornmuffin and the "Rebley Falg"?

I agree too. I've been signing on to the forum for information and I would like an intelligent exchange of observations and ideas. Instead, I see insults, unfounded claims and counterclaims interspersed with an occasional useful comment. I don't post on most of the forums because I have no desire to take part in a classless exchange. When I sign on, I'm often reminded that I haven't posted in a while. Like Bobke, I've been thinking of not even being a reader of the forum any more. I don't enjoy the kind of exchanges that populate this and other areas of the Cycling Forums.

As to the inappropriate suggestion above that we "grow a pair", that's typical of the reason some of us find many of the exchanges inappropriate and off the mark. I thought when I joined this forum that I would benefit from the wisdom and observations of the worldwide cycling community. I've stayed so far in hopes that some of this would change. I'd like to see some modesty and consideration. Others apparently enjoy the exchanges. I know, I can exercise my choices and stay away. I wish I didn't have to.

I'm with bobke on this one. Landis should be upset about that post. Someone accusing him of buggering bobke's son. That's out of control. Landis' has better taste than that.
