A lot of it is farmland, but all the farmers are not averse to that kind
of thing. Mind you, I haven't been down there since 1980!

My two abiding memories... asking when the pub shuts ( October ), and
seeing a Ferrari down there - it was 6 inches wider than the road!

You might look at getting the ferry over to Tobermorey to save
backtracking to Onich.

Excellent! The forecast is OK for Sunday, so hopefully I can get some good
photos.

My plan is to start from Mallaig (getting there by train). First night at
Arisaig then to Ardnamurchan Point, ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory, around
Mull and the ferry back from Fishnish to Lochaline, then to Onich, through
Glencoe and Ranoch Moor, Tyndrum, to Loch Earn, Crieff and home.

Envy. I've only been to Castle Tioram once, and I thought it was the most
wonderful place.

ps. do any of our Scottish correspondents know what the status is of the
application for someone to renovate this and make it a house?
Actually, I don't see much wrong with it, as long as the renovation
is done sensitively and people can still access the area.
Look at Eilan Donan for instance.

Within five miles of it, easily. I'd suggest Sanna Bay - I think there
may actually be a campsite there but if so it's pretty basic. In any
case there's plenty of space for wild camping on the peninsula. Great
cycling territory too - wonderful views, mostly car-free roads, no
desperate hills.

I think you'll have trouble finding anyone around to complain! If
there is a farmhouse around, just ask. It's very rare to get a refusal
in those parts.

My Dad was in a very remote Hotel in Sutehrland one time when, com
closing time, the police car was seen lying in wait for drink drivers
just accross the bridge. This resulted in a long queue for the payphone
followed about 20 minutes later by a convoy of tractors, driven b
crofters wives coming to pick up their over imbibed husbands. Just a wa
of life up their I guess

I will be up that way over the weekend. (Taking the car sadly but then
walking!) I'll keep an eye out for someone a the bottom of a hill,
working up the courage to get back on the bike!
