  1. I have a fair number of spacers under the stem on one of my road bikes
    - about 1.6" or so. The stem is one of them there flippy types with
    about a 80 degree angle on it (110 degree flipped, when all the
    cipherin' is said and done).

    The steerer is 1" aluminium. Will there be benefit to flipping the
    stem and cutting down the steerer besides the loss of about 25 gms of
    weight?

    If the bars end up in the right place, that's all that matters.

    It will change the forward reach slightly which could be either good or
    bad, depending on how the fit is now. Or the change may not enough to
    worry about either way.

    It has been supposed that some stems are better able to bear a load in
    one direction than the other, but in my opinion, this is only likely
    to be a concern with a stem that's not properly designed and/or
    constructed to begin with. Other than that, by shortening the
    steerer, you might reduce steer tube flex slightly (a change whose
    benefit is probably infinitesimal if any), but the single biggest
    effect will be that you'll reduce the number of options you have
    available for bar position in the future. 25 grams is a small thing
    to lose, but that potential future utility might not be. I'd leave it
    as-is, or flip the stem and leave the spacers *on top* if you're
    curious about the potential benefits of reduced steerer flex.

    Yeah, your bike will be about and ounce lighter. Good for bragging
    rights and avoiding the shame of having all those silly spacers on
    your steerer. Beyond that, no difference, nada, nothing.

    If you want to save another ounce or two, go get a haircut.

    It will, IMO, look nicer; and in an (unlikely) endo, the risk to
    your genitalia is reduced. Also, it inflames retrogrouches who think
    a '7'-shaped quill stem is the only reasonable way to attach
    handlebars...that's enough reason in and of itself.

    Personally, I'd flip the stem but leave the steer tube uncut; that
    ought to REALLY [censored] those retrogrouches.

    Heck I've got spacers on top of my stem!

    But then I'm a bit weird since I like to adjust the stem height based
    on how early in the season it is /// how far I intend to ride /// how
    flexable I feel ///whether I'm riding flats or hills...

    Doing that bugs everyone!

    But whats best is the number of people try to explain why its wrong...

    Same here. And when faced with riding 10-20 miles into a stiff breeze to get
    home, it's nice to flip the stem over and drop the bars about 3".

    I also like risers - because you can rotate them forwards/backwards as the mood
    strikes.

    I've had that same idea, but out of laziness, I just set it at a
    reasonable position and leave it.
