Anyone tried new TrackLogs v3?

Still, i think it's out of order that you cant use the old maps in the new
system. Surely weve already paid for the map royalties already, in which
case i wouldn't mind paying for a new interface (v3) with which to view the
files. Ultimately, tracklogs is just an advanced 'file viewer'.

It's like apple selling you mp3 files, and charging you again for the music
whenver they update their software..

I agree, and I'm not paying out any more to them. OziExplorer upgrades
come free, if I remember correctly.....

Maybe we should all email them, or maybe set up a swap system for
Tracklogs maps? ;-)

Hard to tell yet - there were so many problems with the installation process that I haven't got
round to using most of the features. Don't be in a hurry to upgrade just yet.

Version 3 was obviously released without sufficient testing. They subsequently issued 2 builds
within 24 hours and a further one a couple of days later, and they are now up to 3.04. It still
isn't right, I submitted support requests for 2 problems myself, one of them concerning the Import
of map packages and very serious. The other I diagnosed myself and concerned the new gazeteer
feature - if you install anywhere except the default location, it doesn't work at all. Another thing
- there is no Help file. The Help Topics menu item has been removed in build 3.04. The online help
that they talk about only covers the software installation, and not adequately to say the least. The
Help files that you can download are for version 2 - not much use.

After 3 days I managed to get a working installation by starting from scratch (again) and tediously
importing the map packages one at a time, closing and reloading TL between each import to reset
everything and solve the memory management issues.

The interface is much busier than before, with 3 rows of toolbar buttons and a whole raft of tabs
at the bottom and side. I haven't tried most of them, but the Route profile window looks very
snazzy, with a semi-transparent measurement block that you can slide along the route and obtain
various statistics. The Magnifier tab works very well, this shows an enlargement of the area under
the main window cursor and moves in sync with it.

Once they sort out the installation issues this looks at first glance like a real practical step
forward, which would make a change from the general move towards bloatware and featureitis.

They told me that the V2 mapping will not work with the V3 software, you
have to buy it again (at 40% list price).

Unfortunately not. Memory Map did the same, as we all remember no doubt, but I fixed that one.

Seems that the OS actually impose this "upgrade" requirement on the
software makers. Unlike Memory Map, Anquet managed to avoid it last
time by calling their new version an upgrade (i.e. it's still Version
1, but now release 12). I suspect that any other major changes to
Anquet will result in a Version 2 and the need to buy the maps again.

It'll be interesting to see if MM change their copy protection method
in future. On the one hand, it's in their interests to ignore the hack
- and hence make their product look attractive. On the other hand,
there does seem to be a "market" in MM maps on the various file-sharing
sites. That must mean some lost revenue.

I'd echo that .. the current installer download a few Kbytes, which then
downloads 35MBytes (painful on dialup!) of .msi file, and when that
starts to run you get a 'could not verify package author' popup. If you
say 'ignore and install' it then starts download (apparently the same
35Mbytes?) for another couple of hours. When it finally installs and
runs it does not autoload the demo data - you have to manually import it
(under install path/resources/autopkg .. the 'auto' being pure optimism
on someone's part).

I've tried it briefly. It doesn't seem to fix any of my problems with
the V2 version .. slow pannings/zooming when you have a fully loaded OS
square (V2 at least stores it's data by OS square (100km square)), and
complete inability to download GPS waypoint comment fields (which i use
extensively on the 60C).

I am seriously p!$$ed at the attempt to charge me 40% of everything I
already spent .. I'd cheerfully paymore for the aerial photos, roadmaps,
and for new areas of 1:25k mapping, but I ain't gonna pay to re-use what
I already have.

Btw, V2 mapping packages import without any error into V3, and even show
up on the overview map as being there, they just won't display on the
screen (you get the 'unlicensed tile' display). If someone comes up with
a handy patch for fixing that, feel free to share it.

They apparently argue that they have to pay royalties to OS on behalf of
existing customers, which is why they need to charge the 40% plus the ten
quid for the upgraded software. As far as I'm concerned, I've bought the
map data, and I'm not going to pay for the same data again. V.2 does for
me all that I want from an electronic map - I wouldn't have bought it
otherwise.

Apparently they guarantee that v.3 maps will be recognised by the software
v.2. That's the only thing that would have got me *really* [censored] if
it didn't work.

the maps into Ozi?
