  1. Hi- I go to a gym that is similar to Curves ( a ladies circuit, we use
nautilus machines) Anyway - they have these Sport-hoops and you can use it
before, after or during the workout. It's a weighted hula-hoop and is
supposed to trim your waist by 2 inches in 1 month if used daily for a
    certain amount of time.

It's alot of fun at the gym so I decided to buy one since I can only go to
the gym during babysitting hours (which are not daily)

Just wondering if anyone else is familiar with this or has tryed it. I
really don't expect to see miraculous results but it is alot of fun (even
though it does bruise me at first) and it gets me off my butt.

This morning I did a little free-weights, crunches and 10 minutes with the
    hoop.

here's the site, I'm not in any way associated with them I just never saw it
before and wonder if any of you use it too!
    http://www.sports-hoop.com/

    I've got the 3lb Acu-hoop.

I am glad you "really don't expect to see miraculous results" because you
won't get them! Whenever you are faced with some outrageous claim like that,
think it through logically. What is under the skin of your waist? How will
rotating a hoop around that result in any kind of disappearance of
what---muscle? fat? If that is all there is too it--just press lightly on
your fat and it will disappear---then the whole world would know about it
and you wouldn't need to buy the hoop! You could use your fingers....presto,
    magico!

Thank you for responding with the sole purpose of implying that I may be a
    moron.

  4. There have been repeating assertions on here that there is no such thing as
spot reducing. I can't claim experience with having tried to do spot
reducing, but I strongly suspect that it is true.

The value of the device would be in having fun with it, to stave off the
boredom of exercise. That assumes we have not ruined the experience for
    you....

I dont think pat is taking into account that there is more to hula hooping
then spinning it arround your waist and letting it fall to the floor. You

For the most part, spot reduction (that is, selectively reducing body
fat in a particular area via exercise) is a myth.

However, assuming your weight stays constant, you may very well see an
improvement in the waist measurement initially (this is less likely if
you're not a relative newbie to working the abs).

The reason would be due to improvements in posture, moreso than
"muscle tone", which is pretty much a misnomer to begin with.

For example, slump over a bit and measure the waist. Then stand up
straight with ab muscles erect (without sucking in) and measure again.
You'll likely get two different results.

If you enjoy it and it encourages you to do ab work, fine, use it.
But you don't need the Acu-hoop or any special equipment to work your
abs. Crunches work just fine. Compound lifts done with good form are
also great for the abs (I rarely bother with isolation ab work
    anymore).

Well, I used to be a dab hand at hula-hooping in the 60s, and I had a good
waist then : ) Sounds fun, bet it'll work up a sweat, and be a good ab
exercise - it's got to work every bit of your abs. I wonder if the weight
    makes it easier or harder?

Not at all. I like to do 2 tiimes around the circuit, then 10 minutes with

I think it must target some muscles, a wieghted hoop does not magically fly

For the most part, spot reduction (that is, selectively reducing body
fat in a particular area via exercise) is a myth.

More misinformation, commonplace on these groups. Spot reduction is
quite achievable, spot reduction by dieting alone is a myth. When you
burn fat, you do not burn an equal amount from all fat stored on your
body, you burn the more readily available fat first. Availability is
determined by both the locality and the 'condition' of the stored fat.
Heat, as in that generated by local muscles working, will make some fat
more readily available than other areas of fat. Massage, ultra-sound,
infra-red heat pads can all help localize fat usage and allow a degree
    of specific area reduction.

    little about fitness.

This is rubbish. Lifting is NOT a good way for an inexperienced, out of
condition, overweight person to improve abs. You are a thoughtless,
unknowledgeable, potentially dangerous idiot. People following your
advice or suggestions are likely to suffer serious injury.

This person, 'Suze' is a good example of the danger of accepting advice
from newsgroup participants. If you want advice, find a professional,
don't expect useful help from usenet. Find a tertiary trained
physio-therapist with a few years of experience, not a 'coach' in a
local gym, and definitely not a wannabe on usenet.

In fact, asking for advice about fitness or weight loss on this type of
newsgroup is like advertising for a math coach and specifying that you
are only interested in being coached by a person who has failed very
math test they have attempted. Why not ask Liz Taylor for advice about
successful long term marriages? It would make as much sense. These
groups are primarily populated by people who CANNOT lose weight or get
fit, even after, in many cases, a lifetime of failed attempts. What
    could they possibly know?

    Think about it!

I am glad you "really don't expect to see miraculous results"
because you won't get them! Whenever you are faced with some
    outrageous claim like that,
think it through logically. What is under the skin of your waist?
How will rotating a hoop around that result in any kind of
disappearance of what---muscle? fat? If that is all there is too
it--just press lightly on your fat and it will disappear---then the
whole world would know about it and you wouldn't need to buy the
hoop! You could use your fingers....presto,
    magico!

Hi- I go to a gym that is similar to Curves ( a ladies circuit, we
use nautilus machines) Anyway - they have these Sport-hoops and you
can use it before, after or during the workout. It's a weighted
hula-hoop and is supposed to trim your waist by 2 inches in 1 month
if used daily for a certain amount of time.

It's alot of fun at the gym so I decided to buy one since I can
only go to the gym during babysitting hours (which are not daily)

Just wondering if anyone else is familiar with this or has tryed
it. I really don't expect to see miraculous results but it is alot
of fun (even though it does bruise me at first) and it gets me off
    my butt.

This morning I did a little free-weights, crunches and 10 minutes
    with the hoop.

here's the site, I'm not in any way associated with them I just
never saw it before and wonder if any of you use it too!
    http://www.sports-hoop.com/

    I've got the 3lb Acu-hoop.

Heat, as in that generated by local muscles working, will make some
    fat
more readily available than other areas of fat. Massage, ultra-sound,
infra-red heat pads can all help localize fat usage and allow a degree
    of specific area reduction.

However, assuming your weight stays constant, you may very well see
an improvement in the waist measurement initially (this is less
likely if you're not a relative newbie to working the abs).

The reason would be due to improvements in posture, moreso than
"muscle tone", which is pretty much a misnomer to begin with.

[censored]. If you think that 'muscle tone' is a misnomer, you know very
    little about fitness.

For example, slump over a bit and measure the waist. Then stand up
straight with ab muscles erect (without sucking in) and measure
again. You'll likely get two different results.

If you enjoy it and it encourages you to do ab work, fine, use it.
But you don't need the Acu-hoop or any special equipment to work your
abs. Crunches work just fine. Compound lifts done with good form
    are
also great for the abs (I rarely bother with isolation ab work
    anymore).

This is rubbish. Lifting is NOT a good way for an inexperienced, out
of condition, overweight person to improve abs. You are a thoughtless,
unknowledgeable, potentially dangerous idiot. People following your
advice or suggestions are likely to suffer serious injury.

This person, 'Suze' is a good example of the danger of accepting
    advice
from newsgroup participants. If you want advice, find a professional,
don't expect useful help from usenet. Find a tertiary trained
physio-therapist with a few years of experience, not a 'coach' in a
local gym, and definitely not a wannabe on usenet.

In fact, asking for advice about fitness or weight loss on this type
of newsgroup is like advertising for a math coach and specifying that
    you
are only interested in being coached by a person who has failed very
math test they have attempted. Why not ask Liz Taylor for advice about
successful long term marriages? It would make as much sense. These
groups are primarily populated by people who CANNOT lose weight or get
fit, even after, in many cases, a lifetime of failed attempts. What
    could they possibly know?

    Think about it!

    PC

Yeah...you're living proof of your own statements.

    Duh. Ya think?

But what do the above two sentences describing how fat is burned have
to do with an *intentional* effort to reduce in a specific area?

I'm sure all the women out there with fat butts and thighs will be
just thrilled to hear about this.

And just in time for swimsuit season.

Nonsense. You're obviously trolling. The alternative (that you're
actually this aggressively stupid and proud of it) is unthinkable.
