a viral infection has flourished in the east midlands in the past few weeks, and had me off my bike.
I set off with a slight sniffle to cycle north from derbyshire at the beginning of December (against the advice of my doctor , who is me) and my muscles just got more painful each day, so I came back. A week later a 20mile ride to a meeting resulted in 5 days of fever, then two weeks later a couple of miles set me off again.
We have had several pneumonias with it round here , one being a fit postie. The flu vaccine does not prevent it. Several people have told me that a little exertion made them a lot worse.

Yeah I had flu the week before Christmas. Thing is it really started to hit me about 30mins after coming back from a ride. Had a massive sneezing fit and then the old aching muscles started.
I think it's the first flu I have had in about 5 years. Hit me really hard - but maybe it's down to getting a bit older 😉

My regular cycling partner has had a virally-induced vertigo since October, comes and goes every week or two and leaves him totally wrecked, bedbound. All started a couple of days after a triathlon.
Doctors have been hopeless, not even a blood test. Trouble is he's a farmer, so it really affects his business.

If you were riding your bike at all then you may not have had the 'flu (although you would know better than me being an MD) ;-). I've had it twice in my life and the last time I was in bed for 11 days, barely able to get to the bathroom! I've had a few sniffles and coughs this winter but nothing like a real 'flu.

I've had real 'flu once in my (adult) life. I'm with Simon on this; while I was ill, walking around the house was too much for me. Cycling was out of the question.

The correct conjugation is: I have the 'flu. You have a cold. He has a slight chill.
Interesting that it came on after triathlon, and perhaps indicating an infective cause, but vertigo is a real diagnostic problem.I am rarely totally convinced that the cause has been proven in a case. It's usually dealt with by trying to control the symptoms and hope for the best. There are some things to look out for, though. www.menieres.org.uk has some information
And it might be of interest ultimately that someone I know was pleased with Mr Cook at Leicester Balance Centre, Leicester Royal Infirmary, who seems to take a thorough approach.

My mother says, "Men get flu, children get colds, women get on with it".

Indeed. And it doesn't half bugger you up.
I've was off the bike from 18th December (went to Japan) until this Saturday due to a cold/flu I picked up there (one day in bed in Japan with a very high temperature, many days after that of no energy and sniffles.
I've just gone with the flow and done no cycling and it's finally (grabs desk) gone.
Very annoying though since my training was going so well. Sigh.

A good way to test whether someone has flu or just a cold is to pin a 20 quid note prominently outside the window or their bedroom. If they get out of bed and leave the house to get the note they have a cold.

One of the most effective alarms clock allegedly is to set the oven timer and put a £20 note in the oven.
A friend claimed the note was unnecessary for her partner (who had a reputation) because he would be up to switch the oven off before it wasted any electricity.

Heh! Agreed. I had flu last year and it was a week before I made it out of bed for more than the necessities. Last year was also the first for some years when I forgot to have a 'flu jab. This year I remembered...
