Quoted message said:Ten bucks says that 10 or 15 1000 mg of C per day, taken
thruout the day, will cause a distinct improvement in the
symptoms. Vitamin C is water soluble, non-toxic and will
not create any side effects except the possibility of
diarhea at much highher dosages (in which case you simply
take a bit less).
I'll see your ten bucks and raise you ten more.
Vitamin C is absorbed into the body well at lose doses, but
poorly at higher doses. "median bioavailability following an
oral dose is 87%for 30 mg, 80%for 100 mg,72%for 200 mg and
63%for 500 mg. Less than 50%of a 1250-mg dose is
absorbed, and most of the absorbed dose is excreted in the
urine." (CMAJ • FEB. 6, 2001; 164 (3))
The study also showed that "At 100mg vitamin C starts being
excreted in the urine." (Same Ref)
If you want to take 10,000 to 15,000 mg of Vitamin C, just
be aware that the vast majority is simply wasted. While
vitamin C is necessary for good health, there is little
evidence to suggest that more than 200mg per day are
required. A balanced diet with citrus fruits included will
provide the vitamin C required for good health and save
money on buying useless pills and powders.
Vitamin C is more common than most realise: While most
think Oranges, Spinach and green peppers have higher
Vitamin C concentrations, with tomatoes, onion and lettuce
also having high levels of Vitamin C. (Journal Economic
Botany Vol 31,pp76-79)
Conclusion: Vitamin C is vital, megadoses are a waste of
money.
