Any strong wheels out there?

Are you talking about 700c wheels for a road bike? If so, try getting some 32-spoke "traditional" wheels built up for you - say, Shimano Ultegra hubs with Mavic Open Pro rims. Or, if you use a Campag drivetrain, go for Campy Centaur or Chorus hubs. Even with the labour fee for building them, they'll be cheaper than many "boutique" wheels, such as the ones by Mavic, and with that many spokes, should be as tough as anything else out there.

If the wheels are for off-road use, just vary the components acordingly - Shimano Deore XT hubs should easily be good enough, and (I think) you can even get 36-hole versions for that extra bit of durability.

My advice...

1. Don't expect pre-manufactured wheels, especially ones with minimal spokes to remain true for ALL sizes. If you're over 200 lbs. (like me...), they will likely disappoint. If you weigh less, they MIGHT work out for you. Some use special spokes, rims and nipples, so they might require repair from the factory (not your LBS). Not all, but some.

2. Have a reputable wheel builder construct a set specifically for you. Your weight, riding style, etc., will all play a part in the selection of components. 32 spoke wheels will usually work for most anyone..., IF they're built properly.

3. The key to solid reliability is how well the wheels are built. There are many GOOD wheel builders out there (and bad ones...), and their labor charge is very reasonable. Find one and you'll be in good hands, and end up with what you want. I know from experience; ALL of my wheels are hand-built, and not one has failed me yet.

Strong wheels? I'm over 250lb and ride a set of Mavic CXP33s, 32 spokes triple crossed tied and soldered, laced to Campag Daytona hubs. Bombproof and I roll easier than my buddies on Ksyriums.

I'm looking at some Velocity Spartucus road 700 wheels right now. They have two levels, one of lighter guys and one for those over 180 lbs. I'm 160 lbs and am leaning towards the heavier ones. There are totally for training....I have others for racing.
