Waterford. (Thinking of a Cork-Waterford spin soon actually, trying to build up my miileage over the winter. Not a racer but want to so a few blazing saddle thingys and stuff like that next year.....)

Anyone do the Wicklow 200 this year?
My legs started to go at Windgates which wasn't a good sign, considering how little distaance I'd done and what was still to come and I ended up just doing the 100. Still a great day out though. Met some good people along the way after my buddy had gone on to do the 200. And thankfully my photo didn't end up on the W200 site!

I do it every year.
You were in trouble early on - weren't you ?
Perhaps it was just a bad day - you were better off stciking to the 100, so.

I did the Wick200 this year for the first time.Did the 200,but had done a bit of prep for it.Was with a bunch of racers from my club,and knew theyd be dropping me when it came to the big drags.But I was there to enjoy myself,not kill myself from going at someone elses pace!Sure enough,after the left turn at Ashford off they went.Funny enough I met a few of them later on,and helped one over the Sally Gap(the first time i'd seen the magical ton come up on the clock!)who was starting to blow up...I really thought I would end up the same,but pacing myself seemed to work for me.
Looking forward to doing it next year,and similar events elsewhere...
Quigs,are there any similar events in the Waterford area?Spent a week in the Gaeltacht earier in the year,had my rothar with me and loved it.Had never been down there before.Lots of hilly coast roads!

Nothing much down here, I suppose theres a few club leisure cycles around, but nothing big in terms of participation I think. I have not done an organised cycle since 1991 ! Lots of nice roads though as you say, my usual sunday 100k is along the coast roads between waterford and dungarvan with a mountain or two thrown in for good measure on the way home. Very undulating quiet scenic roads with great coastal towns and views, I love it. Always a bloody headwind though.

This Wicklow 200 lark sounds like fun, is it 200 miles or Kms ?

Used to be a leisure event calendar on some irish cycling site but I haven't been able to find that in a long time.

Thinking of joining a club to help motivate me when the weather gets bad/worse, only club local to me though is Comeragh cc and they are mostly racing I think. I used to briefly be with them as a 15 year old, but not sure if I'm up to that now ! That said would love to get some use out of the TREK 5500 I just got (even if I am slower on it than I am on my TREK 1000).

Could be moving to Dungarvan with work in the future,not sure.But there seems to be lots of roadies about down there,Would like to have got a chance to go out with the Dungarvan spin but wasnt poss at the time.Know what you mean about those hilly coast roads though-loved it!Suppose when youre from the flat boring old midlands,anything with hills and sea is exotic!

Comeragh are based in Waterford City and are a small racing club afaik. Dungarvan is 30 miles away but they number about 90 mostly recreational cyclists. Shame they are so far away.

Limerick road is dangerous alright, waterford-cork much better, very wide, quite hilly too in places. I am looking into a Dublin-Waterford spin but the route is a problem, I don't think we can use dual carraigeways or motorway, so that really limits the options. Lots of nice scenic rides in waterford, but the surfaces are brutal. Among the worst in the country.

I am 29 now, retired rower, always had a racing bike and raced for a little as a 14-15 year old. I am thinking of getting back into it, although it might be a little late in life. Wondering what I need to be doing apart from getting on the bike as much as possible, I was hoping that next year events like the W200 would give me an indication of where i am in terms of comparing myself with other cyclists and seeing if I could hold me own in a race, rather than going out blind and getting thumped and demoralised !

I am quite slow as it stands, my 100k spin through hilly coastal roads with headwinds for about 60k, solo is about 4hrs. Although I am not pushing at that, just enough to be comfortable HR at about 70% of max on average. I guess that makes me quite slow, but I have only been training once a week and been on the bike about 20 times this year in total so there is lots of room for improvement I think.

Yep I'll be there next year. If anything this year made me even more determined to do the 200 next time.
My excuse for having such a bad day (other than that I'm a lazy fecker) is that I was just 2 weeks back from 5 weeks in India where I lost about a stone in weight (mostly it just went straight down the toilet :eek: ) and did a total of about 30 minutes training on an exercise bike.
Really enjoyed the day all the same, and of course I take every opportunity to remind people that the 100 was actually 120!

Did anyone make it to the Hilly 125 this year, or any other year for that matter?

Yep Waterford - Cork road is a lot less busy and wider.

For the W200, you need to be able to climb.
Top guys do it in 6+ hours : average speed time though is closer to 8 hours.
Suggest that you build up a bank of miles (I know everyone says this but it is the only way).
Ideally get in with the Carrick Wheelers or the Comeragh CC and go on the Sunday morning spins (they usually head from Carrick/Waterfird to Clonmel and back).
If u need some climbing - there are plenty of good routes (Bunmahon, Comeragh Mountains etc).
You can also do some cross training - I normally run a few miles, three or four times per week in winter.
Your rowing training will help you there.

Dublin-Waterford I've also done - leaving Dublin, you can use the backroads to Arklow.
After Arklow you hit dual carriageway to Gorey : then you can use backroads
from Gorey to New Ross and on over the bridge to Waterford.
It's a nice cycle.
