"Children 'fear playing outdoors'
09:57am 3rd August 2005
Children are shunning sport and outdoor play because they believe that the
world outside their homes is unsafe, a worrying new study has claimed.
Youngsters revealed they are reluctant to leave the comfort of their
bedrooms because they fear for their safety and believe there are too few
facilities.
The results of the new research will be a disappointment for those engaged
in Government campaigns aiming to persuade Britain's children to take up
more active pursuits and healthier lifestyles.
A survey of over 670 children, carried out ahead of national Playday, found
40 per cent of the youngsters said they do not play outside as much as they
would like.
Around 20 per cent admitted they enjoy themselves in the fresh air for an
hour a week or less.
Patricia Durr, of the Children's Society's, said: "The Playday survey is a
wake-up call to both central and local government that play needs to be a
real priority.
"Play is about imagination, exploration and fun, but it's also how children
learn how to interact and share with each other, and other social skills.
"We must protect children's right to play and ensure every child has access
to outdoor public space. Play isn't a luxury, it's a fundamental part of a
child's psychological and physical development."
The children said that poor provision of play spaces, and that the outdoor
world is unsafe, lead them to stay indoors.
Those surveyed for the joint Children's Society and the Children's Play
Council study also said that they do not have enough time for outdoor fun.
In April, a Department of Health report detailed increasing obesity among
young people, including children aged under 10 years old.
Tempting children away from computer games and DVDs to take up exercise is
seen as a key element in tackling the problems.
Adrian Voce, director of the Children's Play Council, said: "There are now
serious concerns about children's health and fitness and increasing levels
of childhood obesity.
"We know that one of the most effective and most natural form of exercise
for children is active play.
"What children are telling us in this survey should make us all think about
how to improve the environments where children live so that they can enjoy
the healthy childhood that is their right.""
