Any experiences with Dazer?

Yeah, I got jumped on Friday. ;-(

I'm trying to be nice, and had put my Halt! and Zounds on hold, but this dog tried to eat my front
tire (I was going about 0.5mph, almost stopped).

Today I was setting my watch, had not mounted when two dogs charged me, circling around the bike,
one nipped at my leg, the other distracted me. The owner was jogging and I had hollared 'Ma'am
your dog isn't going to charge me or chase me is it?'

You can guess the answer...got no apology, no broken skin, but 3 holes in my rain jacket.

I received 1 of these for Christmas. The performance is at best spotty. Dogs I have tested it on
have either 1) run away, 2) come closer, or 3) ignored it. The only animal that seems intimidated by
it is my cat and I haven't had many problems with him chasing me while riding.

The animal has to be within 5-15 feet for the Dazer to be effective. If dogs get that close I find
that spraying them with a water bottle or (worst case) kicking or hitting them on the nose is more
effective.

I actually have one of these, in a drawer somewhere. Seems to be exactly the same brand.

I carried it for a while, but it was a pain getting to it in a hurry, and I had a long stretch where
I wasn't seeing any threatening dogs anyway.

The one time I remember using it was on a large dog that wasn't exactly attacking, but was following
along and getting too close for comfort. He stopped and pricked up his ears, didn't seem
intimidated, but stopped following.

I've heard it suggested that if you use these over and over again on a regular route, the local
hounds may get used to it, realize there's no danger, and go after you anyway. I don't know if
that's true.

Hey Fraser, was wondering when you'd get to the biker groups, now that you're two-wheeling. ;-)

I don't really blame the dog; I blame the owner who isn't keeping it on a leash. Plus, with two
witnesses for the dog (the chick and her
b/f were jogging together), they'd lie and say I provoked the attack or something and sue me for
the vet bill.

As a dog owner myself I never let my dogs of the leash when I'm out. Pity you can't just beat the
[censored] out of the owners in incidents like that. Wait up, you did. ; )

Different incident, and didn't lay a glove on him. We just sat down, ok suddenly, and talked
about it. ;-p

It's like a war zone on this trail, and I enjoy the heck out of it, though I complain and [censored] and
moan about the morons.

I'm gettin' a "Dog Control Officer" patch and a ticket book, I swear. Ok, j/k, b/c that would be a
misdemeanor, impersonating a LEO. ;-P

I'm also a reluctant dog owner. My daughter did the big sad eyes at me for a week, and I
caved, finally.

That's the problem. I'm in a semi-daze when I'm riding, alert, but watching the road, going in and
out of anaerobic states, or occasional oxygen-debt, heh. Getting to my water bottle is a challenge,
let alone squirting cursive quadrapeds or naughty bi-peds. ;-)

Thanks guys. The concensus seems to be it's a hood ornament, and may change your TV channels if you
misplace the clicker, but that's it.

Today not a soul on the trail, and it was a sweet ride.

yes, actually; it's a rather unwieldy shape but it IS effective.
