I have bought from them 6 times in the past 6 months....always a
perfect transaction, great prices, perfect product, great shipping.
Putting together some 80's bikes, and re-shoeing my everyday Trek
uber-bike, these folks have been great. I order online, and it's
easy.

From what I can see, TiresDirect is great-- they must have a nice gray market
connection or some kind of deal. seeing as they undercut the local independent
bike shops by selling tires for just a couple bucks over cost.

Hey, and they don't have to pay any local sales taxes. They may not even be
insured or a real business, but who cares? The prices are great.

We should all get our tires from them, rather than supporting the local bike
shops--those losers who help out at club and charity rides, and who employ some
bike mechanics, and fix flats or help you get your bike together before a big
ride. I mean, TiresDirect gives fast service, UPS-ing the tires, which is
really cool, rather than handing them over the counter in person, which is, I
don't know, kind of boring.

Yeah, those local shops are chumps--paying workman's comp, donating stuff to
the local Neighborhood Bike Works, giving advice on which tires work under real
world conditions, doing all kinds of work and expecting to make any money. And
when they don't have something, they expect me to wait for them to order it
in... when I can go online and wait for some website to order it in, which is
much cooler.

So, like I was saying, TiresDirect.com is really great. I can't wait till all
the local shops go out of business and we can get everything online!

than most shops... and we'll special order even more kinds) BTW-- our agreement
with those brands forbids us to sell online, and we promise to try to stay at
MSRP so that we and other shops have a prayer of paying the rent, while
offering good service and paying our people.

The concept of "volume discounts" is misunderstood by many consumers - like
the customer who gets together with a couple buddies and asks if he can get
a 25% discount if they buy 5 pairs of tires (what bike shop owner hasn't
experience this scenario?). "Volume discounts" on tire prices to dealers
usually require purchases in excess of 50/per tire model/size/etc. (ie; if a
dealer purchases 25 Michelin and 25 Tufo tires from a distributor, the
dealer does not receive a volume discount. He would only receive the volume
discount if he buys 50 Michelin and/or 50 Tufo tires.). Volume discounts are
generally less than $1.00/tire, which does not allow a dealer to offer
customers a substantial discount. Obviously, different distributors have
different policies.... but the general principle holds true across the
industry.

Most killer deals on tires, etc. are on small lots being closed out by a
manufacturer or distributor. These deals do not provide the replenishable
supply necessary for a dealer to offer extremely low prices on a regular
basis. Internet/mail order stores that offer a regular inventory of items at
or near the wholesale prices paid by LBDs have other methods of getting
their inventory.... yes, I know what those methods are - but I'm not going
to share them.
