  1. Here's another classic example of why people can't lose weight. I was
at the supermarket deciding which type of Progresso soup to buy since
they were on sale for $1. This short lady who's obviously overweight
made a remark that they should have all of the Progresso soups on sale,
not just select varieties. She said she was on a diet. So:

Me: Yeah, that would make it easier. I'm buying the mushroom, cause
    I'm doing LC myself.

Her: Oh, me too. You don't look like you need to lose weight.

Me: Thanks, I'm trying to stay that way. The mushroom has 7g of carb.

Her: Yeah, but it has all that fat. These are the low carb ones,
pointing to the Progresso Carb Monitor ones, that aren't on sale.(BTW,
the mushroom only has like 10g of fat per serving anyway)

Me: Well, the carb monitor ones have about the same amount of carbs as
the mushroom or onion and if you're doing LC, you're interested in
carbs, not the fat. If you're doing low fat or low cal, that's another
story. If you want one that's LC and LF, try the Escarole.

Her: But it has all that sodium.

Me: I've had great success with Atkins and it works.

Her: Yeah, it's good to lose weight, but it's bad for you if you do it
    too long.

Me: I'd have to disagree with that. I think it's great long term and
I've been doing it a long time. If you look at my cart, it's filled
with all kinds of healthy food, like chicken, tofu, and vegs

Her: Oh, I thought you couldn't eat vegs on Atkins. Or was that the
    other diet?

Me: Sure you can eat vegs. You should read the book.

Her: Oh, I have the book! (Guess the diff between having it and
reading it was lost on her)

So, is it any wonder people can't lose weight? This woman is
absolutely clueless and doesn't know whether to count carbs, cals, fat,
or anything else. She'll probably be telling people how she tried LC
    and it doesn't work.

It's amazing what they feed people. If you start paying attention, it
scares the living daylights out of you.

What amazes me is that there is a such a huge industry in the junk food
market. I walk down aisles and aisles of j-u-n-k... junk. Chips,
chocolate, soda, etc. Aisles and aisles. Obviously people must be buying
these things for them to continue. Also, it's not like this stuff is cheap.
I've heard complaints about the costs of eating well, but if I always bought
junk food I'd be broke. I wonder what the overhead is and the profit on a
    bag of chips.
I find myself looking at other peoples carts as I walk by and, more often
than not, see a cart loaded with [censored]. And yet I have to defend *my* choice
of diet.. like somehow it's bad for me?! Incredible.

I guess it all fits in with the gov't food guides. Chips are vegetables.
Fruit roll-ups, jams, and sugary juices are fruit servings. White bread and
noodles are part of the whole grains group. Margerine(that even bugs won't
    eat) is the healthy fat.

I know what you mean. If you're not buying the [censored], then you're not
getting enough nutrients. How many people actually eat healthy when there
are rows and rows of refined products in the stores? I'm not saying whole
grains are bad, but why is it that there is only one shelf of actual whole
grain cerials that take 15 mins to cook, compared to an entire aisle of cold
and instant cerials? How many people that claim to be eating whole grains,
actually eat whole grains? Is it the people that eat packaged food with a
label that says, "made from whole grains"?

The profit margin is a huge 25% against $9.5 billion in revenue in 2004

If you follow the money, then its no contest that low-carb will remain
on the (some say lunatic) fringe of society while the junk-food

and refrigerators. All the while taking the cash en route.

Frito-Lay is a subsidiary of Pepsico. Their latest Annual Report has
some good junk food strategy and direction on page 45.

In the meat and vegetable areas, no sweat. Anywhere else, it's a bust.
It's amazing what they feed people. If you start paying attention, it
scares the living daylights out of you.

The same thing is true of recipes in most magazines. I didn't realize until
after I was diagnosed with T2 and changed my dietary habits how *very few*
recipes in monthly magazines are even remotely healthy. Of course, I have a
whole slew of recipe books to choose from, but even articles on "healthy
living" in today's magazines will be surrounded with beautiful pictures of
cakes, pies and cookies. And just think of what children see in their
schools every day -- vending machines filled with all sorts of junk food
(which bring in revenue for the schools, so most are loathe to get rid of
    them).

That's the one that pisses me off the most. 37+ years of eating
margarine only to find out that it has trans fats which are REALLY
    BAD.

ok, so they take out the trans fats. So now it's HEALTHY again!!!!

Most of them have not taken out the trans fats. I only know of one that has
zero trans fat. I see many brands labeled with that, and I think the rules
for labeling "No Trans Fats" are awful. If one serving has less than .5g of
trans fat, they can say it has none. When you read the ingredients list,
you will find that most of them still have hydrogenated and partially
hydrogenated oils. So annoying. Some of them have even reduced their
serving size amount just so that they can label the product no trans fat
without bothering to change their formula.
