  1. Every year, since winning his Tour, Ullrich has had very
lackluster spring campaigns - fat, fat, coming off
tendonitis, coming off suspension, yada yada. This wad
suppposed to be THE year - regained motivation, etc, so of
course many are looking for a hint of form from Jan. Well
never one to not disappoint his form so far has been absent.
In the Setmana Catalan he was 16 min then 6 min off the pace
today. This is not the form I was expecting, especially when
compared to his potential TDF rivals. I suppose the excuse
is he does not want to peak too early and Armstrong, Mayo,
etc are all doing just that.

I remember Ullrich being pretty much the same last year at
this time. He's not doing the Setmana to win, for him and
with many others, it's a training race to get in the miles.
For them, the goal is to finish in the pack and not injure
themselves. That's what a lot of these early season races
are for, especially where Grand Tour contenders are
concerned. As for being fat, Lance looked a bit porky
himself at that race a couple of weeks ago- even they gain
    weight during the winter.

    Armstrong isn't peaking.

  6. Don't worry too much about Jan Ullrich. He knows what he's
doing. He likes to eat (more than Crispy Creme donuts) and
he spends his spring shedding weight. When July comes along,
he'll be there. I think one victory and five second-place
finishes at Le Tour speak for themselves.

Whether he can finally beat Lance, that's another question.
But wouldn't it be great to see Armstrong, Ullrich,

You know, this is true. His Tour win came after what was his
best spring by a wide margin. Now, its not like he was
tearing it up on the bergs in Belgium. But he had some
reasonable results and a few very good results:

February - Tour of Mallorca, 10th April - Tour of
    Aragon(2.3), 9th
    - GP Primavera (1.3), 5th May - Henninger Turm(1,1),
    9th June - Classique des Alpes (1.1), 7th
    - German Championship
    - Tour of Switzerland, 2nd, 1 stage win

That's not a bad run-in to the Tour, far better than he's
    done since.

He's been dieting and looks to have lost some weight. He has
a way to go, but he's looking better. I read somewhere that
he was having some heart problems and was told he'd better
shed some weight. May he live to be 100.

Yeah really...who is this chump? Where did anyone say that
Ullrich was going to come out and impress "fat old man"
right from March on up to the Tour? Besides, it was widely
reported that Jan had a virus in January and his whole
program was pushed back several (4 to 6?) weeks. Anyone that
is expecting him to burn up the roads at this point in the
season is not paying attention. All Ullrich needs to be
competitive in the Tour is enough training to get him down
to his fighting weight. He looks lighter this year at this
point than any other season since '97.
