Is it just me, or would anyone else rather not know? We don't post everytime someone dies in a
car accident, so why make us all paranoid by listing all the cycling deaths?

I'm with you on this. First there would need to be a post every two to three days to keep up.
Second it focusses everyone on the dangers of cycling when its actually a very safe activity.
Concentrating on the very small risk does nothing but put people off cycling.

Do you think the reporting of aeroplane crashes on alt.disasters.aviation puts the readers
    off flying?

I ask again, if news of British cyclists' deaths cannot be reported in a British cycling newsgroup,
    what can be reported?

I, for one, am not put off cycling in the slightest by news of a cyclist's collapse and death at a
roadside. If anyone in this group says that they will never cycle again because of such news I may
reconsider my position. But until that time I will continue to cycle and read reports of unfortunate
    cyclists' deaths.

No, but this isn't uk.dead.cyclists. The word "disasters" in the newsgroups name probably gives you
the hint: those of a nervous disposition, do not read.

For which reason I would recommend adding something tot he posting title which makes it clear to
those who don't want to know, that this is a fatality report.

I wonder if you wouldn't mind piecing out our imperfections with your thoughts; and while you're
about it perhaps you could think when we talk of bicycles, that you see them printing their proud
wheels i' the receiving earth; thanks awfully.

I think it's useful. Firstly, by studying the circumstances by which the rider got killed makes
me more aware of the dangers out there.

In most cases you can learn nothing from the accident reports that we all don't already know. Ice is
slippy, pavement is hard, a small percentage of drivers are morons etc. Only a particular blackspot
could be useful information and one accident does not make a blackspot. Local knowledge and reports
of such places from locals on URC would be welcome.

I'd personally rather know *all* the *potential* dangers in *any* activity

    I try not to.

Individual reports of incidents (many of which occur in places miles away from my home) certainly
*don't* make me paranoid - any more than reading

    the

reports on people getting electric shocks would make me frightened to wire up a plug or the mains
distribution to my friends' recording studio.

What these reports *do* do is:

    1. Alert people to dangerous situations in certain areas.

A single accident does not a blackspot make.

    2. Make people think of their *own* personal safety whilst cycling - this

    is

    Quoted message said:

    *not* the same as paranoia!

I'm sure we all do this all the time.

    3. In some cases, they may publicise a case the Police wish to investigate further, and these

your bike (or just for fun), I would consider it to be my *duty* as a citizen to warn you of
these potential dangers. That is all I think people are trying to do here, not be "macho" or
    frighten anyone!

Fine. Warn us of accident blackspot and dangerous areas in your locality. No need to tell us about
    every incident though.

    Quoted message said:

Anyway if we listed all the *car* accident victims there wouldn't be much space for anything else.
In my area (Thames Valley) it seems that driving

    is

far more dangerous than cycling anyway!

Yes, thats the point - a new URC reader might think otherwise.

Do you think the reporting of aeroplane crashes on alt.disasters.aviation puts the readers
    off flying?

Yes. I used to fly a lot and without realising what I was doing, was reading a book on air accident
investigation in a departure lounge. I couldn't work out why I had empty seats around me in a full
departure gate until the penny dropped. People were looking at me with distinct discomfort.

Ask the average person and they will tell you cycling is dangerous. All the literature, newsgroups,
campaign groups, cycling segregation facilities reinforce that view. We need to concentrate on the
benefits of cycling and not focus so intently on the minor risks.

This is a cycling news group. If news about cyclists is to be censored here what will be left?

Define 'censored'. I'm using a different definition.

    A

I'd have assumed ' new rule - no cyclist death reports to be posted here' as censorship...what can
and can't be communicated within a defined environment...no?

Well, given that there's only the force of discussion and public displays of disapproval, I couldn't
call it censorship. I mean, no one's putting black smudges all over the messages or deleting them or
anything, are they? That'd meet my definition of censorship.

That's nonsense. Such a rule could only possibly be so qualified if it was enforced.

However, <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/england/2725329.stm/>, besides containing no deaths and some
hope that the idiot will get a spell at Her Majesty's Pleasure, contains the gem; "Baxter said he
had not realised there was a child in the trailer."

Here's the new Paul Smith, surely - it's fine to run over adults.

But then we need to let of steam among ourselves by complaining about the [censored] cagers and
commiserating with the wounded and fallen - this cathartic process then leaves us free to expound
the joys of cycling to the Legions of the Damned.

When I was travelling back up the M1 on Sunday (in a car!) they had the gantry signs light up with
    something like:

    FIREFIGHTER STRIKE
    PLEASE DRIVE WITH
    EXTRA CARE

Did make me wonder that people could be slightly more careless when there was no strike since they
could be cut out of a burning wreck if they happened to lose it.

I have no problem with that. How about using [Fatality] to preface any post about a cyclist's death?
I doubt the number of hits will be altered one little bit.
