  1. Hi all,

First off, thanks to all who have replied to my initial post about the shin
    pain...

Next, I'm just going into my third week of running this much and this
consistently and I've noticed that I've *gained* about 2-3 lbs! I'm not
eating more though probably not drinking enough water (always hard for me).
I did some research on the 'net and it does seem that lots of beginners
initially gain "water weight"? I gained shortly after I started at this
"pace" for lack of a better word.

Does that sound right? Did any of you out there experience this? If so,
how long does it last approx? I'm not terribly worried, just not happy
    about the weight gain...

    Thx in advance, JJ

Hmm most beginners gain from added muscle, not water weight. But
ignore the scale, and go by looks. Honestly, 3 lbs is about the weight
of a good dump, not a significant amount at all.

Ummm...I don't think it's possible that I gained 3 lbs of *muscle* weight in
under 3 weeks. It takes longer than that I thought. I did find several
sites that mentioned short-term water weight as the muscles retain more
since they are being worked harder/differently.

But, ultimately, you're right...3 lbs isn't anything to stress over. ;-)
    Thx, JJ

Absolutely false. You gain muscle almost immediately, but how much and
how fast is an individual thing. It all depends on where you are
starting from. Three weeks is more than enough to gain 3 lbs.

It really isn't. That can be gained by simply drinking water.

Also, do yourself a favor. Take a pic of yourself in a couple of
poses, and put it away for a couple years, then take new ones and
compare. I wish I'd done that when I see someone from 20 years ago,
and they say "holy S**t, someone got weights and a diet plan for
xmas". The changes are gradual, and you see them everyday so they're
very gradual, and you don't notice as much as others do who haven't
    seen you in awhile.

Have you taken any skinfold measurements? Abdominal circumference?

That's a good idea. You're right that the changes are/would be so subtle, I
might not notice them right away. I'll think about doing this. Thx again,

Umm...Not the "skinfold" thing. I wouldn't quite know how to do that. I
don't really have "folds" thankfully. I've measured my waist before but not
recently. That's something I could do. Thx, JJ

Along those lines, buy one of those body fat bathroom scales. I want to
do that, but haven't yet ponied up my $85.
Body weight can vary considerably from day to day, but body fat content
I think will be more consistently and motivational. In any case, make sure
you weigh yourself at the same time / conditions of every day, e.g. first
    thing in the AM.

I did notice a fairly quick change in my legs after starting aerobics a
couple years ago. Especially my calves. I've always had "bird-legs"
especially from the knees down (thanks Mom <grin>😉. But after a few months
of aerobics, I put on my tall boots (riding boots), which I don't use very
often and they were tight! Not too tight to wear, just not all loose like
    they usually are. Interesting.

So, it's possible that I've gained a bit of muscle with the running. I'm
fairly lean (in most places - not all <smile>😉 but can "bulk" up a bit if I
hit the weights. I mean it doesn't take much for me to start getting bigger
arms and such. I have a very small frame though (tiny bones - small feet,
smaller hands) so I don't lift too much weight very often.

I think I'm retaining water too though. I'm now up even more than
before...but my clothing isn't any tighter so I guess I shouldn't "sweat" it
    (pardon the pun).

    Thx! JJ

I do try to do that...I try to *not* weight myself too much in the first
place (messes with my head) but when I do I try to do it at the same time
first thing in the morning. It's amazing how much more "stable" that
weight/number is compared to weighing at night. That can be down right
depressing sometimes so I should avoid it! <grin> JJ
