Another new-to-me apple

I really enjoy the Pink Lady and also the New Zealand Rose. They are
normally very delicious and crisp, unless picked very early. My wife was so
impressed with the NZR that she saved seeds and started one in the yard. We
both know that what we get wont be the same as the one we removed the seed
from, but they should still be good. We live in zone 5 and the tree has
survived the heat and cold for going on 3 years now.

I heard the author, Frank Browning, on a radio program, but can't remember
when or which program. It was a fascinating interview, though. He talked
about finding heirloom varieties that were generally thought to be
"extinct." Google on "heirloom apples" and you can see a ton of sites
dedicated to resurrecting the old varieties. I wish I could find some in
the orchards around here. Maybe I'll break the bank and send away for a
sampler this year.

I have a mature HoneyCrisp tree. Alas, it has started bearing every
other year and this year it has no fruit -- so I'll have to buy them at
the local orchard.

(I think next year I need to thin the fruit drastically to get the tree
back on track)

Yep, got two trees in my backyard. They were developed at the U of
Minnesota. Hardy in zone 4 also. (that is the USDA zone 4 with minimum
temps from -20 to -30 F for the non USA folks)

Southern Minnesota (there's an oxymoron for ya.)

I was on the map twice, but I think both have been removed instead of
just the extra one. I haven't checked it in a day or 2.

all it said was imported. They usually say where it is imported from. I did
note it was next to other New Zealand apples.

As for the Honey Crisp, I have heard of them here, but have not seen them. I
will have to make a trip to one of our produce stores and check there. I am
going back to vegetarianism. I tested close becoming a diabetic this week
and need to get the levels of nasties down. I may even take a drive up the
mountains this season and get some good San Diego apples. Our Julians are
super!

I was told I was "borderline" diabetic once, and I didn't do much about it.
Later I was told there was no "borderline", either you were or you werent.
I didnt correct my eating habits and now I take pills for it. The good news
is that most of us can control it with our diet. Count your carbs. As I
understand it, the normal person can have 300 a day. Diabetics have to
limit themselves to 150 (at least that is what my Doctor said about me). I
dont take medication as long as I limit my intake to 150 carbs a day, so
there is still hope for us.

I just had another NZ apple, a "Jazz". It was good, but not as wonderful
as a Pink Lady or a Honey Crisp.

Thank you Dwayne. Actually he specified that I wasn't borderline.......just
close. It is a problem as I live for carbohydrates. Makes me grumpy or
rather grumpier than usual.
