From searching the forums I have seen lots of questions about fork steerer dimensions, but still cannot quite work out my question - how tight should the fit between the steerer and the headtube be?
I have an aluminium frame and a carbon fork that I would love to match up but not sure if they do. The fork has a 1 1/8 steerer and it fits very snugly into the headtube (and I do mean very snugly - it will turn alright but there is definately no play. the bottom of the steerer has a slightly larger diameter section which does not fit into the headtub - should it, or is this for the for the headset?
I know my way around old steel frames and conventional headsets, but this is all new territory for me!

forks do have a small section at the bottom of the steerer that is slightly larger that the crown race fit's on. The crown race then presses up to the headset when it's set up. It should be snug when the headset's installed, but it does sound like you have a mismatch.
